A short list this time (maybe some of your defs got lost in the snow?) Vote
for your two favorites no later than 6 PM EST, Sunday, January 24.

1. [Slang] a groundhog.

2. [Slang] a conclusive blow.

3. [Slang] a wooden puppet which can be made to dance by pulling its
strings.

4. [Aust. slang] an echidna.

5. [Aust. slang] a hard rain.

6. a monitor lizard _Varanus sparnus_ of North Western Australia,
formerly an important source of protein for some aboriginal tribes.

7. a political activist who joins an organization with which they do not
agree with the intention of changing it from the inside.

8. [Ceramics] a 'witness cone' or 'pyrometric cone': a slim pyramid made
from dozens of carefully controlled compositions. Each cone measures
the amount of heat absorbed in a firing kiln. As the cone nears its
maturing range, it softens and the tip begins to bend, drawn down by
the influence of gravity. Some are used to switch off electric kilns
when the weight of the sensing rod warps the melting cone in what is
called the 'kiln-sitter'.

9. [Obs.] a person who habitually sleeps in the nude.

10. an ill-tempered woman.

11. in croquet, a ball that comes to rest against the leg of a hoop.

12. an operative in a steel rolling mill who catches a plate as it comes
from the rollers and directs it to the cooling area or back for
further rolling.

13. a word that is on the tip of one's tongue but is unable to be
remembered.

14. one who constantly finds fault; a complainer; a nag.

I like the word, and I rather like most of the "definitions", too. I'll have a go at

2. [Slang] a conclusive blow.

and

11. in croquet, a ball that comes to rest against the leg of a hoop.
