I find that OpenOffice does not necessarily open a Word (.docx) document perfectly, so I usually will just ask the sender to "save as" a .doc file and resend. I don't like the newer versions of Word but sometimes have no choice. <sigh>

It's basically the same. It split off when there was some concern about OpenOffice remaining open
source. I use it for word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentations, and I haven't had
any compatibility or usability issues.
