No, not at all. It's perfectly correct BrE, wherever that's spoken. AmE is
"first name". Like the difference between "colour" and "color" and where
full stops/periods are placed.

No literate people over here are smug. Don't get me started on *that*
stuff, which is an entirely different topic, upon which--both as a writer
and in my former role as CompuServe's grammar and usage maven--I've spewed
rants both publicly and privately.

In a culture where the first name *may* be 'what we would call the surname' as in many peoples from the indian subcontinent; then
forename implies 'what we would call the christian name'....

As I understand it the decision was taken by our PC masters as follows: because 'first' implies the first name one writes down then
it doesn't resolve the problem of cultures where the 'family' name is written first. However, we cannot use 'family name' because
that would offend those who do not live in such social units as families or the increasing number whose families have broken down;
so we will opt for 'forename'.
