I don't use my iPad often - only when travelling, and hence I don't
remember how to do things. I thought that it was possible to empty the
Email trash can with some simple action but I can't find it in the
manual with any search I tried. So - does anyone know how to do this?

Guerri,

I don’t have an iPad, but my iPhone runs basically the same software. On an iPhone running IOS 8, go to All Trash, tap Edit at the top right, then tap Delete All at the bottom right.

OK, I started up my Email. I leave it in airplane mode when I am not
planning to go online, in case that matters. I don't have anything that
is labelled as "all trash". I have the mailboxes on the leftm and across
the top on the right I have the various icons: a flag, a folder, the
trash can, a curved left pointing arrow which as I recall means "reply",
and a pad with a pen which is for composing a message (you can tell that
I don't use the iPad much).

I can choose to make the mailbox on the left my "trash" and then I see
all the messages that are in the trash. I can read them and put them in
the trash again, which may essentially delete them forever. I did look
at the manual but that was not helpful. Hmm, I just tried selecting
Trash as my mailbox and I could then choose Edit and could mark the
messages then delete them. Anyway they are gone, so thanks for your
help. I suspect the iPad and I are never going to be friends (sigh).

I don't have an iPad, so I can't help, but I find that when I have questions like this, a Google search is very helpful.
