Ok-- here are 20 definitions for TARVE... all totally
plausable, but only one came from a dictionary.
Please vote for TWO by Tuesday at 6am Eastern time,
3am Pacific time, and around noonish Tuesday across
the Pond. [Newcomers welcome, but no peeking at a
dictionary!]

1. turn; bend

2. place where pay is distributed to soldiers.

3. a burrowing rodent of the northern Andes, Marmota
tarvata

4. colloq. [Eire] a peat turf or turve [from gaelic
ti~rv - fire]

5. Swedish bread.

6. a mixture of herbs used in Indian cooking

7. a corbel-supported stone lintel with keystone.

8. [Finnish] Thursday.

9. (Scot.) a strap used as an instrument of
punishment (also tawse)

10. one of the cultivated species of wheat, as
distinct from uncultivated species such as spelt and
emmer [Du. tarwe ‘wheat’ < MLG < PIE *dhŕva (Skt
dūrvā)]

11. a circular pan or platter used in the processing
of hand-made matzoh for Passover use.

12. a wooden frame used to confine a horse being
shod.

13. a ground nut grown for food in sub-Saharan
Africa.

14. opaque watercolour paint.

15. [Finnish] a cross-country ski having one or more
toggles acting to retard backward motion of the ski.

16. to turn a rowboat by pulling in opposite
directions with opposing oars.

17. a shallow, recessed ledge in a cliff or canyon
wall.

18. an earthenware cooking dish with a lid.

19. to flirt outrageously.

20. a half line of verse, especially when separated

This is one of those words that could be just about anything. Haven't
a clue. 10 and 17 sound believable, I guess.
