Here  we have 13 very fanciful, tricky, and/or creative definitions for RINPOCHE -- plus one that emanates from an actual dictionary.

Please vote for any two of your choice by email to the GROUP and do so by 3:00 PM tomorrow -- Tuesday,
October 6, or the equivalent for your time zone.

Good luck, and may the best def win.

to each other; trimetric.

5. in sabre fencing, a parry in tierce followed by a rapid riposte and retreat.

6. medieval leather coat worn as armour.

7. the portion of a nobleman’s land on which his vassals were permitted to hunt.

8. underhand, secretive

9. a Tibetan prayer wheel.

10. a pustule caused by an eruptive disease.

12. a catch-basin.

13. originally a disorderly variation of English billiards as played by
British officers in India in the 19th century, in which a player who
incorrectly sank a ball into a pocket would announce "Rinpoche" and be
obliged to consume two drinks while buying one for each other player;
now applied similarly to any cue sport (pool, snooker, etc.), generally
with a lesser penalty.

14. an ascetic Brazilian martial-arts discipline, of and for the very poor, known chiefly abroad for its scanty training uniform [Rio

Pg., ‘broke’, lit. ‘torn trousers’]

I don’t buy anything resembling a pocket. Too obvious (hence probably correct, but no matter). And there’s no rubble.

Much as I’m intrigued by the idea of Victorian beer pong (#13), I’ll go for the Tibetans: 9 and 11.

I see 14, not 13, definitions. Regardless, and for lack of a better idea, I'll vote for 1 and 14.

I'm torn between 3, 8, and 11. The idea of a camel-mounted gun stretches
my credulity, so I'll go for the underhand and the Tibetan lama: 8 and 11,
please:

8. underhand, secretive

11. in Tibetan Buddhism an incarnate lama or highly respected religious
teacher (often used as an honorific title)

I can't resist voting for either llamas or lamas, so 11 gets my first
vote. And 14 made me laugh.

As such, I cannot resist offering the following penned by Ogden Nash:

The one-L lama, he's a priest
The two-L llama, he's a beast
And I would bet a silk pyjama
There isn't any three-L lllama

(Nash appended a footnote to this poem: "The author's attention has been called to a type of conflagration known as a three-alarmer. )"
