Although I' mm pleased that my fake def did so well, I am, unfortunately, not in a position to handle a dealership.

Set-up of my new computer and printer has been delayed due to my wife's accident in falling and breaking her arm, which was also accompanied by a sharp decline in motor abilities need for walking, standing etc.

Thus, I have no access to a printer now, nor my dixonary software or prospective word files.. If someone can point me to a download for the Dixonary dealer program I was using (can' t remember its name, but it began with "dixon...", I would be happy to install it on the loaner laptop I am using and venture to do a deal.

Dismayingly, -- Dick

That would be Dixomat, but I don't know where you might download it from. (On the rare occasions when I deal, I've stopped using special software. I do it manually, because I find it easier and faster.)

Commiserations to both you and Jane.

It appears that I downloaded a copy of Dixomatic 1.03 earlier this year. I don't know how well it "travels," but I would be happy to try to send it. I must have found it on one of the Dixonary sites, but I don't recall now which one.

Ah, here it is: http://www.dixonary.net/dealer-support-software

Thank you. Got it (the Dixomat by Marijke) -- but my Win 10 says it won't run on my machine.

I am willing to try to do a deal manually. So here goes:

Round 2648 --

The new word will be

*****************
RINPOCHE

*****************
As usual, capitalization is irrelevant. Please send DQs and or fake definitions to me at endash (AT) verizon (DOT) net -- and NOT to the group.

DQs should be sent right away and fake defs by Monday, October 5, at 1:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time or the equivalent in your zone.

I have never done this manually before, so please bear with me. Thanks.

Paul Keating

This is sad, but to be expected.

Marijke was writing for Windows XP, but she was much chuffed that her solution would still run on Windows 3.1, which appeared 12 years earlier. Backwards compatibility is admirable, but it shouldn't be taken to extremes. In this case, it made Dixomat 64-bit-proof. Not that anyone could have expected her, in 2004, to see that coming.

For those of you who don't know, Marijke was a Dutch-speaking geek brave enough to play this very English-language game. She died, aged 53, in April 2009.

I wish I could refer players to her quirky and revealing personal website. It was still there a year or two back, but I've just checked, and it's gone now. Even the London Mathematical Society's website no longer carries the brief obituary that once was there.

Thanks.

Thus, I have no access to a printer now, nor my dixonary software or prospective word files. If someone can point me to a download for the Dixonary dealer program I was using (can' t remember its name, but it began with "dixon...", I would be happy to install it on the loaner laptop I am using and venture to do a deal.

Actually, IIRC, her native language was Frisian. But her English was
flawless. She was a super-intelligent woman and a very nice person to boot;
a long-time programmer, she had just earned her Ph.D. in mathematics at the
U of Birmingham when she died.

As Paul mentioned, it wont' run on 64-bit operating systems. I still
use Paul's Coryphaeus, but it's a Windows machine so I have to use an
emulator on my Mac.

I know a few people are working on spreadsheet dealing and that's
probably the most OS-robust plan going forward. Well, that and
pen-and-paper.

Actually there is no problem on getting Dixomat to run on my windows 10

mind you, it has to be 32-bit windows 10 and you then have to locate and
hand install NVTDM.EXE

Guerri Stevens

I am sorry to hear about your wife's arm and other difficulties. I still
remember breaking my humerus. There were constant reminders of why we
have two arms. At one point I thought I would have been better off if I
had broken a leg, then remembered where I was when I broke the arm:
walking alone in the woods. Then there was the fear that it might not
heal properly. For me, the healing took two months, then there was
physical therapy. Maybe it will be the same for your wife. Sadly, that
will not help her other problems.

Someone already mentioned a medication worsening her condition and I
will second that. The doctors prescribed pain medicine for me, and
cautioned me not to let the pain get out of hand. I know the stuff has
an effect because I lasted 4 days on it. The 5th day, early in the
morning I looked out and the stars were moving. At that point I said "no
more". Your wife may not be able to identify possible problems as being
due to medicines. Read the stuff that came with her medicines and/or
consult her doctors.

Fortunately, she has not been experiencing much pain, and Tylenol is doing the job without resort too stronger stuff.

I'm running it in a Windows 8.1 VM on a Linux 64-bit machine, and it runs fine. I'll try it on Win10
when time permits; I should imagine some compatibility mode would let it run.

Best wishes,
