we are a bit fixated on sound - 7 or more out of 17 - so - despite there
being an obvious connection to the Latin, I think I shall avoid all of
them. Unexpectedly the Scots "sonsie" is not present but I shall avoid
Scottish defs too
so... #5 is cheeky and deserves a vote and #17 is inventive; so those
two for me please

I'm convinced it's sound related.
In my submarining career I don't think I ever used this word so 12 and
13 are out. (I did use a zarf, though, so 8 is out.)
1 should maybe have been combined, but whether with 10 or 15 is unclear.
Ultimately, I find 16 the most convincing, and 17 should have a word for it.

Definition 1 seems too vague to be real. In fact, all the sound-related defs are
suspect. I'll take 2 and 5:

There seem to be three groups of people: pro-sound, anti-sound and “I dunno.” I’m pro-sound. Maybe 1 or 10?

I'm in the non-sound group. Also the dunno group. I'll try the dressmaking

17: a standing wave in a river or stream caused by hydraulic flow over a
submerged rock or similar obstruction.

I'll try one non-sound and one sound, both among the least believable in
the list, because that's how it's been going lately:
