View Full Version : [Dixonary] MOELLON definitions

Jim Hart
June 23rd, 2015, 09:05 PM
Our ship set sail a little later than planned. Midshipman Mallach
pointed out that the local high tide was at 0748 not 1030 so some time
was lost while he was keelhauled for being a smartypants. It's true we
may now meet a flood tide at the entrance to the bay but I'm sure you
will all cope.

To amuse you on the voyage here are 18 definitions of MOELLON to shiver
your timbers. Their order has been determined by a secret maritime
formula. Cast your votes in the next 36 hours, ie before
2359 at Port Phillip Heads
1500 in the Thames Estuary
1000 in Chesapeake Bay
all on Thursday 25th

Somehow the unintended line breaks have come across from Thunderbird. Sorry
about that. I considered resending but thought that might only make things
worse, so I trust it's readable enough on your own screens.

Music at sea, in forms such as dancing the hornpipe and singing sea shanties, is a centuries-old tradition. I'll try the musical 7 and 17, hoping not to suffer the same fate as the band members on RMS Titanic.

I may as well randomly choose two definitions since my attempts at analyzing definitions doesn't seem to work very well. With that in mind, I'll choose the following:

15. A small edible mushroom with a brown body, closely related to cup
fungi.

18. the sugar that is added to wine must to compensate for low sugar
content in poor years; the legal maximum of this

Number 10 seems reasonable, and number 13 is so off-the-wall that it's probably true.

I'll go for one of the musical instruments and the Welsh hill, 7 and 9:

7. A musical instrument with a keyboard and metal plates struck by
hammers that produce bell-like tones

9. a round-topped mountain [Welsh]

I don't believe any of them, including my own.

I'll go for #3 for the Merlin reference, and #6 for creative use of the
word "wretched".

Well, I've boiled it down to four that I think MIGHT make sense. Maybe.
Possibly. It's probably none of them, but . . .

I'll go with
