View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2618: Vote for GAYAGEUM definitions

Efrem Mallach
June 19th, 2015, 08:03 PM
Dear Players,

Here are18 definitions of GAYAGEUM. Seventeen of them come from your ever-so-fertile imaginations. The 18th comes from a more reputable source. Pick two you like for any reason during the next 39 hours or so; that is, no later than noon (1200 hours) on Sunday, June 21, U.S./Canada Eastern Daylight time, and announce your choices by public reply to this message. I think that deadline is also:

11 am, same date, U.S./Canada Central Daylight Time
9 am, same date, U.S./Canada Pacific Daylight Time
5 pm, same date, British Summer Time
6 pm, same date, Continental Europe Summer Time
2 am, Monday, June 22, Australian Eastern Standard Time
4 am, Monday, June 22, New Zealand Standard Time

Please confirm the conversion to your local time to be certain. I will tabulate the votes at noon on my EDT clock, or as soon after that as I can get to them.

The definitions, in order by character count (which does not necessarily correspond to visual length):

1. a temple of the Bahá'Ã* faith.

2. an insect-repelling ointment.

3. a recurring annoying or odious task.

4. a meeting place with multiple purposes.

5. the planetary component of the gaia complex.

6. [Tamil] one of the seven true names of Vishnu.

7. an edition containing various versions of a text.

8. a syllogism confirmed by an incidental proposition.

9. a traditional Korean musical instrument, similar to a zither.

10. a genus of insectivorous plants that includes pitcher plants.

11. an indoor arena of ancient Rome in which wrestling matches took place.

12. [Fort.] sod used to line or cover parapets and the faces of earthworks.

13. [Biol.] the microtubules and actin filaments that a cell extrudes to form a pseudopod.

14. a legal requirement for silence on some matter, i.e. a gag order or non-disclosure agreement.

15. protean substance from which the Earth and heavenly bodies were formed, with the release of the void-filling ether.

16. a chrysanthemum cultivar developed in Japan in the late 20th century, having unusually large blossoms and longer than normal petal retention.

17. a device invented by Eric Blair (George Orwell) with which a person can record ideas (esp. those remaining after sleep) at night in bed without fully waking up.

18. _colloq._ (freq. _humorous_ or _ironic_). A hypothetical structure in the hindbrain that would characterize male homosexuality but has never been identified or isolated; _fig._ a notional object with ideal political properties.

Some definitions have been reformatted for consistency. Any formatting inconsistencies are my errors. They should not be taken to imply anything about the source of a definition.

New players are welcome, even if you didn't submit a definition for this word - as are, of course, veteran players who didn't happen to submit one. Full rules can be found at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules .

Have fun, and vote on!

I think the -geum portion has to do with either flowers or the
earth/something planetary. Which means 5 and 16 get my votes, although
it's probably my third choice, 15.

I'll take a stab at 7 & 12.

7. an edition containing various versions of a text.

12. [Fort.] sod used to line or cover parapets and the faces of earthworks.
