View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2599: LYMPHAD [Results]

Paul Keating
April 15th, 2015, 12:49 PM
The OED’s definition
<http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/111600?p=emailACvWtqP.WPHsc&d=111600> of
LYMPHAD is: “[corruption of Gaelic longfhada: see langfad n.] A one-masted
galley propelled by oars. Now hist.; and Heraldry borne as a charge in the
arms of some Scottish families.”

I chose this definition partly because it is not, I feel, one of Bradley’s
best. The etymology contains the c-word, and galley is redundant with propelled
by oars. Long fada is something even I could translate., even though I
haven't spoken Irish in nearly 50 years. It means “long ship”, as in
Viking: at school I was set to learn a poem in Irish that began Tháinig
long ó Valparaiso “There came a ship from Valparaiso.” I never did learn it.

The winner of round the round is Keith Hale, whose definition “A type of
stalagmite which forms as a hollow tube” earned a natural 7 .

Shani Naylor takes coveted second place with 6 points.

And there were two players in runner-up position with 4 points: John Barrs
and Mike Shefler.

Sorry to be picky, but Guerri also voted for 14 which I think may put me in
the lead...

Sorry Keith. My points were unnatural, so you indeed are the next dealer.
I'll be happy with my real winner status.

Yes, she is, and here's why:

I was warned that the program couldn't accurately pick the votes out of the message (hence the red, "Could be wrong") but I didn't see that there were exchanged digits between the suggestion and the message.

A revised posting is on its way.

Sorry, Shani, but I disagree. I made not one but two errors in my vote
attribution from Guerri's ballot. Correcting the one error gave you one
more point (not 13 but 14), but correcting the other took a point away from
Keith and gave it instead to Mike Shefler (not 4 but 3).
