However - didn't notice this before - the deadline seems to be less than 22 hours after this one was sent out. Did you mean for the dates to be on the 12th?

LIBELLA – The goddess of supermarket tabloids (NAD).

Seriously, I'm heading for Germany and France in the a.m. and will only have my iPhone and as such will defer offering real definitions – since it seems that the only time I "win," is when it's hard to deal.

So, while Effrem is enjoying Peking duck, etc., I'll be stuck with Wienerschnitzel and ris de veau.

There was a subsequent update, Efrem; the deadline is now exactly one day
later. It's now 12 March.

Odd, this message appeared in my mailbox this morning (March 11) but the date sent appears to be 2 days ago. Perhaps the lines were clogged with spam and it got delayed.

Well, now we know libella must have something to do with either sex or
pharmaceuticals. :)

But more seriously:

I did, apparently, receive the "Moderator's spam report for dixonary"
yesterday at 20:45 UTC, containing a notification of your announcement
message. Unfortunately, I was celebrating my lovely wife's 40th
birthday and didn't get to it until this morning, a wee bit too late to
do anything about.

As for a possible reason it was marked as SPAM, it failed the Sender
Policy Framework (SPF) check:

Received-SPF: softfail (google.com: domain of transitioning
johnb (AT) john-barrs (DOT) co.uk does not designate 74.125.82.51 as permitted
sender) client-ip=74.125.82.51;

This essentially means that whatever server (google.com, apparently) you
used to mail your Dixonary post from is not included in your custom
domain's DNS records as a permitted sender.

This exact issue has occurred on our lists before: Tim Bourne's votes
for Round 2132 (August 2010) went to spam when he switched from his
virginmedia.com sending address to his siam.co.uk address. I'm not
sure if you sent from a different address as usual, or a different
computer, etc., but this is likely very similar to the problem you are
encountering.

A related issue occurred in June of last year when Yahoo! and AOL began
rejecting messages sent from their respective domains which were not
originated on their own servers, forcing Dick Weltz to change which
email address he used to communicate to the group.

SPF is only one of several inputs to the SPAM algorithm, but if you have
the ability to change your DNS record's SPF to indicate the SMTP
server(s) you use for outgoing mail, it should improve the success rate
of your outgoing messages.

Forgot to add, I changed the group settings a few months ago to simply
reject messages from addresses not in our group, instead of putting them
in moderation, so we should in theory not get any emails in
moderation... except "false positive spam" posts from our members...

They subscribe via the usual means:
- Option A: Go to the Group webpage and click the "Join This Group" button
- Option B: Send an email message to dixonary+subscribe (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com
- Option C: A moderator can directly add someone by email address

Previously, we had allowed anyone to mail the normal group address
(dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com) and if they weren't a member, it would go
into the moderation queue from which we could add members. This worked
for a few years but sometime last year we were flooded with hundreds of
spam messages daily and just couldn't keep up (and anyone who had
actually tried to communicate that way would have been lost in the
shuffle anyway.) And I don't recall ever getting an actual member that
way in the time it was available.

You used the same address for the message below that you did when you
posted the original word announcement. Which is NOT the same address you've
now asked us to send our defs to.

I think GooGroups has gone loopy.

As an aside to all the technical discussion, if you check the Groups
website after emailing a message you would know immediately if it had been
received correctly. I generally write directly onthe groups site (as I'm
doing now) but when dealing I use email and then go to the website to check
that I've done it right.

I have thought a bit more,

That has to be goo-groups crap-up - or an unusual internet pathway to
get to some server somewhere - Facebook is very critical about where I
sign in (it even complains if I change machines within the one wifi) and
it has not forced me to accept a new isp or new location

as far as my DNS records are concerned, having set them up by carefully
reading at the time I actually do not know enough to risk changing them
without a lot more care and reading (my intellectual capabilities are
fading - I wouldn't dare even try it now)

Yes, Johnny, I'm familiar with both addresses (they're both in my address
book).

The message to which I was replying below, and the one to which I'm
replying now, were sent from your johnb address.

In your message updating the deadline, you asked us to send our defs to
your johnnybarrs address.

I now know that perhaps I should do that (ie post and then go onsite and
check) However that certainly is not my usual practice. I do not go
onsite to read emails

With the exception of being a moderator I never ever go on to the group
site and even when I go to see (and usually delete as spam) "suspended"
emails I have *never eve**r* read the emails their that way

The gmail address which is the johnnybarrs one is only used for the game
- and sometimes private conversations arising out of it and of course,
over time it has attracted a little spam. I only ever go to read that
on-line when I am dealing - so the first thing then is to mark as read
and archive everything since I last dealt

All other emails are read and stored on desktop by Mozilla Thunderbird.
Obviously, very occaisionally I go and do maintenance on my own website
ones.
The ntlworld addresses (now Virginmedia) are unusable now because Virgin
has implemented gmail but is using a horribly restrictive spam filter
where anything that it detects was mailed to more than 12 people is
regarded as spam and so one has to go onsite to be able to read even
family news. I do not go onsite to read emails so I no longer use it.

Johnny, hope my remark didn't seem preachy. It was really meant just as a
comment on our different ways of participating. I prefer to use the website
for everyday dixoning so when I do occasionally email I'm still a bit
unsure if it's really working. For you it's the other way round and one
small glitch among hundreds of postings is hardly an issue, more a
curiosity.

pas de probleme: I didn't take it as preachy
(I once saw a list of all the ways that different cultures say "nah
problem mate")
