View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: AVG Valentine

I was reading my Email a few minutes ago when I received a pop-up
valentine from AVG (Grisoft). Not a Email, mind you, that might have a
way to opt-out, but an actual pop-up that covered up part of my screen.
I immediately went to their web site to complain.

I have often wondered why there are increasing numbers of entities -
businesses and yes, even politicians, who do this kind of thing. What do
they expect to gain? In the case of politicians, I simply decided not to
vote for them. I don't know what to do about AVG - I didn't see any way
to opt-out of this kind of thing. I suppose I could vote with my feet
and choose some other product, but I suspect that all of them will start
doing this kind of thing if they haven't already.

How would they know? I don't remember whether they asked if/when I
registered their product.

I'm sure they know more about us than we can possibly imagine.

I've noticed that the telephone sales pitch people have started saying
"may I speak to Mr. or Mrs. Stevens". That is, when the caller is
actually a human, rather than a recording. Maybe I should have my own
pitch with which to respond. "Thank you for calling sir. I assume you
are looking for information on the (fill in the blank) that we have on
sale this week only..."

Another good reason not to use Facebook. Of course, for all we know
Google is analyzing the stuff we post here and determining our
personalities based on the length of our fake definitions, which ones we
vote for, etc.

I asked the AVG person who responded to me whether it would be possible
to BUY their product, rather than using the free one, and thus avoid
getting the popup ads. He said no, they send them to everyone.
Apparently they are sent randomly by region, which will certainly make
those of you who didn't get the valentine a lot happier. I.e. it wasn't
something you said that offended them.
