View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2582 - VOTE NOW! - FAGOTTIST

Judy Madnick
February 10th, 2015, 08:13 AM
Here are 16 definitions for the word FAGOTTIST...but only one is correct. Please send your votes (by responding to this email) for what you believe are the two definitions most likely to have come from a dictionary. The deadline for voting is 9 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, February 11. As usual, I will let you determine the time in your time zone. :-)

Any misspellings, weird spacing, etc., are my fault and not an indication of the accuracy of a particular definition. The formatting was fine in a test message sent to myself, so I hope you all receive it the way it was sent. :-)

Good luck!

1. _sl._ a gatherer of wood.

2. a bassoon player.

3. a carnival fire-eater.

4. a libertine.

5. a maker of sausages.

6. a person who uses force to collect financial compensation for a real or imagined wrong.

7. a supporter of the seventeenth century movement to burn witches at the stake.

8. a timber-raftsman.

9. a wicket receptacle used in ancient Rome for carrying sacred utensils in a procession.

10. an idle spectator, esp. one who stares for a long time at something.

11. arsonist; pyromaniac.

12. formerly, workers who collected kindling for fires; by extension, an academic synthesizer of unrelated political theories for the purpose of creating concensus. (19th C.)

13. musician who plays the fagot (q.v.).

14. one who applies delicate edging or lacework to garments.

15. one who collects and preserves specimens of rare ferns.

16. someone or something that wanders or strays from the proper course; [both lit. and fig.].

2 and 13 -- a bassoon sorta looks like a stick of wood maybe? 13 is
obvious wordplay though

animals, but nothing here seems to fit that so I'm falling back on it
being musical: 2 and 13

To me, the question comes down to "what's a fagot?" in this context. If I knew that … Unfortunately, that's where I stumble.

Absent any better inspiration, I'll go with 2 and 7.
