View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2577: FERS [Definitions]

Paul Keating
January 23rd, 2015, 12:08 PM
Our inventive players have concocted all but one of the eighteen
definitions for FERS presented alphabetically below for your edification
and entertainment. The remaining definition is, believe it or not, real.

Please vote for the two you think the best, for some value (or values) of
“good” that seems appropriate to you (such as plausible, politically
correct, embarrassing, witty, implausible, long, or as chosen by a random
number generator). You can do this whether or not you have submitted a
definition, and whether or not you have played before. You're not allowed
to vote if you know the right answer.

1. Obs. Abbreviation for “Freely Electronically Redistributable Software”
which entered general use on the Internet in 1995 after years of low-level
confusion over what exactly to call software written to be passed around
and shared (contending terms including freeware, shareware, and sourceware
were never universally felt to be satisfactory for various subtle reasons).
The first formal conference on freely electronically redistributable
software was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in February 1996 (sponsored
by the Free Software Foundation). The conference organizers used the FERS
abbreviation heavily in its calls for papers and other literature during
1995. The term was in steady though not common use until 1998 and the
invention of open source, after which it became swiftly obsolete.

2. A breach of etiquette.

3. A category of venomous vipers, of which the best-known is the
Fer-de-Lance.

4. Sc. with pl. concord. The excrement of the red deer.

5. Extreme heat.

6. A feeling of unease or nervousness.

7. Fierce. [OE]

8. Law. A legally empowered substitute; attorney-in-fact.

9. Chess. Obs. 1. The piece now known as the queen. 2. A pawn which has
passed to the eighth square.

10. In heraldry, pointing upwards, or referring to the upper portion of a
coat of arms.

11. Regarding; about.

12. A ringed strap tied to leg of falcon or hawk.

13. Round pieces of wood fastened under a horse's hoofs to prevent the
horse sinking in boggy ground.

14. A seed head.

15. A small highly venomous snake of southern Asia.

16. So-called “grey sable” fur; trapped when the sable is in partial winter
coat.

17. Scots. The string by which a sporran hangs.

18. A traditional Korean hat with a wide brim.

4 is nicely absurd (wish I had given it) and 7 seems too obvious by half.

These definitions have an unusually high percentage of those delightful ones that make me think "even if FERS isn't the word for that, there ought to be one."

Anyhow, much as I admire the effort that went into definition 1, I'll try two from King Arthur (not the baking flour) and all that: 10 and 12.
