View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2576: VADIMONY votes

Daniel Widdis
January 19th, 2015, 10:39 AM
Well, the deadline extension didn't bring any more definitions but it
did bring me a good night's sleep, and allowed one submitter to alert me
of a misplaced definition, so we're all set.

Here are 15 definitions for VADIMONY, one of which is real. Please vote
for two within the next 36 hours, by the deadline of Tuesday, January 20
at 11:38pm EST, which is 8:38 PM PST where I am. For those around the
world, it's Wednesday, January 21 at:
4:38 AM UTC, and GMT for those in England,
5:38 AM CET for those in The Netherlands,
3:38 PM AEDT for those in Melbourne, and
5:38 PM NZDT in Wellington

** VADIMONY **

1. Criminal negligence.
2. An isotope of iridium.
3. The trait of false praise.
4. 1. Largesse. 2. /Obs./ A bequest.
5. Fellow travellers; the fellowship of the road.
6. /Obs./ Alchemist's compound of mercury and stibium.
7. Dried leaf used in ancient times to make perfumed
ointments.
8. A bond or pledge for appearance before a judge on a
certain day.
9. In Orthodox Christian churches, a period of penance for
a venial sin.
10. Tribute paid to a besieging army to induce it to raise
the siege and depart.
11. A short-cut; [Lat. /vadere/ to go]; by analogy an
action in law which avoids prosecution.
12. A Mexican plant (/Convolvulus vadimabensis/) yielding a
resin formerly used as a cathartic.
13. In certain jurisdictions, a court-sanctioned payment to
or for a child in lieu of accepting parental
responsibilities.
14. When a territory changes sovereignty: the right of an
inhabitant to retain their former citizenship or accept the
new one.
15. The inability to walk in a straight line, due to some
neurological condition such as Parkinson's disease [Med. now rare
<Latin /vade/ walk]

2 and 6, please...with the probability that they're incorrect, which would be good because I won't be able to deal anyhow due to travel plans. (I should be able to submit definitions and vote through 2/4...but won't be able to manage tallying votes, etc. Fortunately, my track record is such that that probably won't be a problem. )
