View Full Version : [Dixonary] [OT] Some dumb Tbird questions

Dodi Schultz
January 3rd, 2015, 11:17 AM
I have been very happy with Thunderbird, as I think I've said in earlier
exchanges.

But now, suddenly, today, it's behaving strangely. (Maybe I hit something I
shouldn't have. It's entirely possible.) I know some of you understand this
stuff. I hope you can help . . .

(1) When I open a message in my inbox, extra lines have suddenly appeared
in the header. I would like them to go away. After the From, Subject, and
To lines (which are all that are normally present): There are now
additional lines: Message ID, In Reply To, References, and X-Account-Key;
each is followed by a bunch of numbers and letters that are meaningless to
me. How do I make these extra lines go away?

(2) When I click Reply to a message, a miniature version of a piece of the
message screen appears in the middle of my screen. I can make it go away by
clicking the red box in its upper right corner, but I don't want it to
appear in the first place. How do I prevent it?

(3) In the write screen (the one I'm in now), the toolbar with "File",
"Edit", "View", etc. isn't there. That means I can't, for instance, insert
something, such as a URL, I've copied from somewhere and want to include in
my message. How do I make that toolbar reappear?

TIA for any help anyone can offer.

—Dodi

Postscript to the message below:

Never mind question (2). I seem to have succeeded in making that intrusive
little monster disappear.

As to #1, however, I find (by scrolling) that there are actually even more
lines than I've noted there, which probably isn't relevant; I'd just like
to get rid of them all.

And #3 is a serious problem.

Thank you, Johnny!

Now, problem #1 has disappeared (what I actually did was check "horizontal"
vs. "vertical"); thank you.

Problem #2 persists, and I can get a normal reply screen only by clicking
the "maximize" icon on the miniature. New sub-problem: When I close Tbird,
a stack of all the windows I've used while it was open appears in
mid-screen, and they have to be deleted one by one.

Checking all of the toolbars in the View list doesn't help w/problem #3.
That toolbar still doesn't show up in the message-writing screen. (It's
missing as I write this.) And I can't get to Tools and Options while I'm IN
this screen, because that toolbar's missing!

Aaaaargh!

I don't understand what you are seeing in problem 2. I looked at
Tools>Account Settings and didn't see anything helpful there (under
Composition/Addressing you get to say whether and where you want the
original message quoted back). But is that what you are seeing? You seem
to be saying that the message to which you are replying reappears, but
not in the "quote back" format. Or are you seeing a piece the pane that
has the *list* of messages?

Tools>Options didn't seem to have anything meaningful.

I am not sure exactly what you're seeing with the new sub problem, but
when I close Tbird while, say, my address book is open, Tbird itself
closes, but the address book remains on the screen and I have to close
it separately. Is that the kind of thing you're talking about? If so, I
have always assumed it was *normal* behavior and thought nothing of it.
Whatever is normal when one is talking about any behavior on the part of
computers, cars, and a lot of other stuff.

Actually, Guerri, that particular problem seems to have gone away. See my
subsequent message(s).

Drat. Our parchments and quills never gave us this sort of trouble.

My most serious problem is the missing toolbar, the one that has File,
Edit, Tools, etc. As I write this, it's gone!

Nope, and that's weird. When I close Tbird, I'm back at the desktop.

No, our parchments and quills never had these problems, and those they
did have, like spilled ink and such things, were MUCH easier to diagnose
and cure.

On the missing toolbar: I have to ask these dumb questions because there
are so many ways to set things up, not to mention different versions of
Tbird (mine is 17.0.2). As I compose this message, in the "Write" screen
I have File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Options, Tools, Help at the
top. If you don't have that toolbar, then it doesn't help you for me to
say that with the View item you get to say what toolbars you want to
see, one of which is the Menu toolbar, which is probably what you want.
There must be a way to get that back.

What happens if, while in the main Tbird screen as opposed to the screen
where you compose messages, you used View and made sure you specified
the menu tool bar there? Would it carry forward to the Write screen?
i.e. a trickle-down effect? I am afraid to turn off the menu bar myself
for fear there would be two of us missing it. There is also something
called a Status bar that is checked and I have no idea what or where
that is. What would "status" be for a message that you're composing?
Sentence unfinished? Not sent? Underneath the File, Edit, etc. bar there
is "Send, Spelling Attach, Security, Save: maybe that is the "status" bar???

Okay, great: I have the same Tbird version you have. That's the point, I
DON'T have that toolbar; it has vanished. In fact, when I go back to the
main screen, which is the inbox, that toolbar isn't there, either. I HAD it
there, but I don't anymore. I just totally rebooted, but that didn't help;
nothing changed. Now I am totally without printing, copy/paste, view,
tools, etc. What now???

Dodi,

Do you have a version of Thunderbird that has tabs for your in-box and other open items?

If you do, you might try clicking in a vacant space in the row with the tabs. A menu might pop down from there that has visible items checked. This toolbar might be unchecked. Try checking it.

(I don't have Tbird, so I can't try this, but somebody suggested it.)

When I was reading your message, "inbox" showed at the top. Now, in a reply
window, I get "Send", "Check Spelling", "Attach", and the like.

Nothing like you're describing.

:-(

Thanks for trying.

In what I call the "main" screen, I have the folders along the left side
and on the right I have the list of messages in the top section and
whatever message I'm reading in the bottom section.

At the very top, spanning the full width of the window, I have a wide
bar with File, Edit, View, etc on the left and the little Windows icons
for minimize, full screen, and exit on the right. Directly under the
File, Edit, et al there is a tab. If I right click in the empty space at
the top, i.e. to the right of the tab, I get a drop-down list with Mail
Toolbar, Menu Bar, and Customize. In my case, there is a check mark next
to "Menu Bar" in that list.

If I click Mail Toolbar in that list, I get "get mail", write, chat,
address book, tag, and quick filter.

If I click Menu Bar to uncheck it, File, Edit, View et al go away.

Try that - I think this is what Efrem was suggesting, although you may
have only the single tab, as I do, rather than multiple tabs.

Yes, Guerri, that's what I meant. Since I don't have Tbird on my computer, I couldn't see exactly what it would look like or be as clear as you were in describing it.

OMG. IT WORKED! IT WORKED!

Guerri, what can I do for you? You have saved my sanity.

I shall be forever grateful.

P.S.: If it mysteriously vanishes again, I take back all of the above.

You're welcome, Dodi. You have helped me with Tbird numerous times! I
keep reminding myself that one of these days I should actually read the
instructions/manual/whatever for Tbird. But now I think its days are
numbered, so there's probably no point.

Mine (version 31.3.0 running on Ubuntu Linux) normally shows just one tab, showing the folder I'm
reading. If I right-click in that tab bar, but not on the actual tab, a pop-up menu allows me to
enable or disable the menu bar.

Best wishes,
Tim Bourne.

I think the rumours of Thunderbird's impending death are somewhat exaggerated. As far as I can see,
what has happened is that Mozilla has ceased to support it as a mainstream project, but an
independent project team has taken over management of the project, and, for example, a new release
is planned for mid-2015. I, for one, do not plan even to begin looking for alternatives unless it
becomes clear that I have to do so.

Best wishes,
Tim Bourne.

You've got a point, there. And even if Tbird does "die", it probably
won't happen suddenly.
