View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: Thunderbird Fails to Collect Gmail

Guerri Stevens

I have set up my Gmail account so that Tbird will collect messages from
it. It works if I use File|Get Messages For. But my Tbird settings for
the account say to "check for new messages at startup" and
"automatically download new messages". As best I can tell, it is not
doing that, and it gives me no error message.

I know that Gmail now considers Tbird to be a potentially unsafe Email
client, but I have changed my Gmail setting to allow Tbird access.

So, does anyone have any ideas on how to make this work?

Also, what are the rest of you using for Email? I think it was Paul who
posted a message a few days ago saying that Mozilla was no longer
updating/supporting Tbird. Maybe I should (shudder) switch to something
else.

Slightly unrelated, but how does Gmail decide where you are? I did get a
Gmail message about what it thought was an unauthorized access, but
apparently Gmail thinks I am in Tennessee. Possibly it uses the location
of the internet provider, which may be Tennessee, for all I know.

I'm still using T-bird (version 24.6.0) and it recently asked to install
an upgrade, which I haven't done yet.

I still use TB happily to gather email from 14 different email addresses
and while that involves 6 different providers, in fact 5 of them are
actually gmail - in the sense that they use gmail servers and if I log
on from a browser what I see is obviously gmail.
My only issues are nothing to do with TB...They are with the providers
who use gmail as their mail server for some of them use an incredibly
heavy handed approach to spam - for instance if they detect that
something was mailed to more than 12 people then it is spam and goes
into the spam bin... it doesn't matter if the sender is in my
address-book or if I say 'not spam' about that sender a hundred times.
To make sure I am receiving everything I have to go to each account on
the mail server using a browser at regular intervals and mark some of my
spam them as not spam and stay logged in online while TB collects these
messages (my TB is set to collect every 5 minutes while I do this
exercise.) Some accounts I check online daily others weekly. The
frequency I visit is determined by the amount of real spam - which I
keep deleted - on one account everything that is marked as spam (about
10%) is all falsely marked and I have to override it. On anther account
it receives about 80 genuine spam every day as well as about 10 false
spam to override

As I say though, the problem is not TB, that works perfectly to my
satisfaction - even the "change TB to another machine" software works
well. I also do not think it is gmail itself for my 'genuine' gmail
accounts do not have those kind of problems- what is spam there nearly
always really is spam

Just to confirm - my settings are
checked: collect at startup
checked: collect every 10 minutes
checked: automatically download new messages
usually unchecked: leave messages on server
(but the less used accounts have checked: leave messages on server /
until I delete them)

I'm using Intellect by Chaos Software "with powerful email and contact management," according to their website at www.chaossoftware.com. I like it because it integrates email, contact list, appointments, and a task list, which all (except email) appear on the "home" screen. The only real downside that I have found is that it no longer allows for plain-text messages. I'm a member of some groups for which you must use plain text, so I have to go to my email account online to send messages to those groups.

And there is now a Desktop Sync program that allows me to sync everything but email to my Android phone.

A plus is that I can call the support number during business hours and get a real person with hardly any "hold" wait. A small group of us have an email list so that we can share ideas, ask each other questions, etc.

I don't use Gmail. I do use Tbird, which collects my mail from the Verizon
mail site when I wake it up (and thereafter at whatever intervals I've told
it to use) and deposits it in its own inbox and has thus far done so
reliably. I'm still using version 16.0.2, because I switched to the next
update (17.0.1) and didn't like it, so I switched back. (Prior versions of
Tbird are still online and downloadable.)

Apparently, from the exchange of messages here, Mozilla jumped Tbird from
ver 17 to a much higher number, skipping a lot of intermediate
possibilities. (Perhaps they were devised but discarded versions.)

can it handle multiple email accounts? - this is critical for me and the
documentation doesn't make it clear (or it is using terminology that I
do not understand)

Certainly it can handle multiple accounts, and the mailboxes can be huge
without any noticeable difference in performance.

It's quite full-featured, and the only problem with it might be that it offers
more than one really needs. I did not find it particularly hard just to set
up and use as an email client. Of course it has folders and filters and all
that, plus I do make some minor use of the built-in task scheduler and
mass-mailing support. It's one of the few clients that will show you both the
plain-text and HTML versions of email, if both are present, and it's very easy
to examine the SMTP headers, which some clients do their best to hide from you.

Guerri and others - no one has mentioned whether their mail is a POP
account or IMAP. Would this make a difference?

When I switched to Tbird a couple ofyears back I also went to IMAP, having
previously always been POP. Main benefit for me was having all my mail
synced between my computer and the Gmail server so that I could log in to
Gmail from anywhere whereas previously Gmail had all my incoming mail but
generally missed my sent mail. It also provided a lazy way of having a
constant backup.

The main downside I find is that there is often a frustrating delay with
the dreaded spinning blue circle while (I think) Tbird does its
back-and-forth with Gmail, comparing and contrasting. Especially when I
first turn it on, typically the header information shows up immediately in
Tbird but the body of the message can take forever - especially if it's
something I know I want to read! Sometimes if I'm in a hurry I'll just go
straight to the gmail site (via Firefox). And I'm a light email user so
this is not because there is a huge volume of mail to catch up on.

As I recall I did have to do some fine tuning of Tbird settings to get the
two to play nicely together, especially wrt deleting mail. Can't recall the
details at this moment but could look back if need be.

And FWIW I do have a second email address for occasional different purposes
(ransom notes, abuse of politicians, etc.. the usual stuff) but rather than
asking Tbird to fetch it, the second account automatically forwards to my
gmail address. Works well for me YMMV.

Jim

I am on version 17.0.2, so perhaps I should update. Then again, aside
from collecting Gmail messages, it seems to work OK.

I did not tell Tbird to collect messages at certain time intervals. My
habit with the Gmail account was to visit once a day, so I essentially
used the same policy when setting up Tbird. It is possible that there is
a glitch in my version of Tbird, although I am pretty sure I've used it
to collect Gmail messages before and it worked. Of course Gmail itself
has changed over time.
