View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: Running CHKDSK

I have tried twice to run CHKDSK. It has to be run as administrator, so
I right click on it and do so. Then it runs, and I wait. Then it
finishes and displays statistics and immediately closes its window so I
have no chance to read them! I will try doing some more research to see
whether there is a better way to start it up and perhaps some switches I
can append that will let me see what it's found, if anything. There must
be something I am missing.

Guerri,

You need to run it in a Windows console (still, and now woefully
inaccurately called a "DOS box"). Search for "cmd", run that as admin,
then do CHKDSK from there. That way the console window stays open after the
program finishes.

How are you getting to it? Here is the recommended method:

I haven't tried it to see if it works.

You can get the chkdsk information from the system log. See

I actually have that on my desktop, although I've labelled it "Command
Prompt". I right clicked, chose "run as administrator" and it worked.
Don't know why I didn't think of it myself.

Sorry for the delay in replying - I got involved in other things. I have
Vista, but the link with its screen shots did give me a look at how
Windows 7 appears.

I took Paul's advice and opened my command prompt window running as
administrator and ran CHKDSK from there. It worked just fine.

Thanks - I took Paul's advice and opened my command prompt window as
administrator and that worked fine, leaving me in the window to see the
results.
