View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2552: BANJAX - Final Posting

Christopher Carson
October 22nd, 2014, 11:40 AM
In round 2552, 4 players earned top spot with 4 points: they were Paul
Keating, Rose Knoblauch, Tim Lodge and Shani Naylor. Rose Knoblauch's
definition "Brightly colored sleeve garters." earned its author the deal,
and the others can heave a sigh of relief that their defs did not earn one
more vote.

There were 2 players in runner-up position with 3 points each: Hugo
Kornelis and Mike Shefler.

The true definition was 17: "To ruin or destroy." (AHD 5th Edition). One
lucky guess just pipped me for a D0.

1. _Irish_ A revenue man. Votes from: Hart, Knoblauch, Madnick and
Naylor
Submitted by: Lodge (DQ), who scores natural 4.
2. _arch._ A group of _banjos_ q.v.; The orchestra at a
_minstrel show_ q.v. Vote from: endash
Submitted by: Cunningham, who scores natural 1.
3. A castration tool for cattle and sheep that uses a
small elastic band to cause the testicles to atrophy,
rather than making an incision. No votes
Submitted by: sdsgraham.
4. An experimental musical instrument, designed by Jimi
Hendrix. It is based on a banjo, but the body is shaped
like the blade of an axe, creating a rough edge to the
tones. Vote from: endash
Submitted by: Kornelis, who scores 1 + 2, total 3.
5. An almost extinct cultivar of cider apples found mainly
in the northern and western parts of North America. It is
medium-firm to the touch with an orange/red vertical
streaky appearance over a yellow/tan background. Vote from:
Shefler
Submitted by: Hale, who scores natural 1.
6. Any of several dwarf hornbills of subtropical Asia. Votes from:
Abell, emallach and Morgan
Submitted by: Shefler, who scores natural 3.
7. (Zool.) The aurochs or European bison. Vote from: Kornelis
Submitted by: Widdis, who scores natural 1.
8. An ecclesiastical curse. Vote from: Guerri
Submitted by: Morgan, who scores natural 1.
9. A strap supporting an instrument, especially a drum, in
a marching band. No votes
Submitted by: emallach.
10. An antidote to a jinx or spell, usually chanted in a
darkened room, with incense of some kind. Vote from: sdsgraham
Submitted by: Guerri, who scores natural 1.
11. [Arab. Myth.] a fearful and malevolent demon that
poisoned oases. Votes from: Hale and Naylor
Submitted by: johnb (DQ), who scores natural 2.
12. Brightly colored sleeve garters. Votes from: Cunningham,
DodiSchultz, Madnick and
Shefler
Submitted by: Knoblauch, who scores natural 4.
13. _(colloq, orig. U.S.)_ To get the better of; to cheat
or swindle; to hoodwink, bamboozle. Votes from: Bourne, Guerri,
Hart and Widdis
Submitted by: Naylor, who scores natural 4.
14. Any of several species of Xanthorrhoea, a genus of
perennial flowering plants, also known as grasstree or
balga. Votes from: Abell and sdsgraham
Submitted by: Hart, who scores natural 2.
15. A small hoofed mammal of south-western Asia, possibly
related to the hyrax family. Vote from: Knoblauch
Submitted by: Bourne, who scores natural 1.
16. _Dublin slang_ vt. To invite or summon to a political
gathering at a public house, with the implication that
refreshments during and after will be free; vi. to speak at
such a gathering; transf. to substitute liquor for rhetoric. Votes
from: Bourne, Cunningham, Hale and Widdis
Submitted by: Keating, who scores natural 4.
17. To ruin or destroy. Vote from: Kornelis Real definition
from AHD 5th Edition
18. A parrot of northern South America. Votes from: emallach and
Morgan
Submitted by: Abell, who scores natural 2.
19. Long pole on wheels for transporting logs. Vote from:

But as far as I can see, *Shani* is highest in the Rolling Scores! (She has
14, Tim L 12, Rose and Paul each 7.)

Let's not rob Shani again. She's highest in the rolling scores!

Dodi,

You are correct. I’m not sure why Cory thought that Rose had a higher score when Shani clearly leads in the rolling scores. I can only conclude that I must have introduced a glitch when I had to reinstall the program to get started.

I just advised both by direct email. Argh. Confusion reigns - one of my typical rounds obviously. I could claim that I was distracted by issues at home but I won’t.

Cory doesn't get the latest rolling scores updates, so you always have
to do the tiebreaking manually.

Ouch! Of course. I knew that since the update function isn't working. That's what I get for being distracted.
