There are a total of 20 definitions for BANJAX. Please vote for two, by
public reply to this message, before deadline, which is 10:00 AM EDT on
Wednesday, October 22, 2014, or 7:00 AM PDT . As with the def deadline,
this one is adjusted to the dealah's diurnal cycle.
1. _Irish_ A revenue man.
2. _arch._ A group of _banjos_ q.v.; The orchestra at a
_minstrel show_ q.v.
3. A castration tool for cattle and sheep that uses a
small elastic band to cause the testicles to atrophy,
rather than making an incision.
4. An experimental musical instrument, designed by Jimi
Hendrix. It is based on a banjo, but the body is shaped
like the blade of an axe, creating a rough edge to the
tones.
5. An almost extinct cultivar of cider apples found mainly
in the northern and western parts of North America. It is
medium-firm to the touch with an orange/red vertical
streaky appearance over a yellow/tan background.
6. Any of several dwarf hornbills of subtropical Asia.
7. (Zool.) The aurochs or European bison.
8. An ecclesiastical curse.
9. A strap supporting an instrument, especially a drum, in
a marching band.
10. An antidote to a jinx or spell, usually chanted in a
darkened room, with incense of some kind.
11. [Arab. Myth.] A fearful and malevolent demon that
poisoned oases.
12. Brightly colored sleeve garters.

So many good ones!
Honorable mention to 2 and 4, which would have earned my votes if I
hadn't kept reading. But I'll go with 13 which nearly matches a def I
almost submitted, and 16 because it's so Irish and I wish they'd do that
on this side of the pond instead of robo-calls during dinner.

We've discovered that a lot of robo calls quit after 4 rings. So we let
the phone ring 5 times. It's not totally perfect, but it helps. It is
also possible to simply refuse to answer the phone during a meal,
although it is not easy!
