A fascinating word! As a sailor, I've always had a passing interest in
meteorology but never heard this term. Now, of course, I'll find
excuses to throw it into everyday speech.

I tried to look up whether the okta unit could tell me the difference
between "partly cloudy" and "mostly sunny" but it didn't seem to be able
to resolve that conundrum. If they just gave forecasts in oktas it
would be so much more clear.

Dan

I was DQ for OKTA. It's very familiar to me from my days as a military
aviator - now getting on for 40 years ago, but I can still just remember
them. When you flew into an airfield, in Europe at least, air traffic
control
would tell you the local pressure, the wind velocity, and the cloud cover
as, for example: "Cloud 3 oktas at 500 feet, 8 oktas at 1000 feet". I seem
to remember that this didn't apply when we went to a US base, when the
equivalent report would be something like: "scattered cloud 500 feet,
overcast (or ceiling? - I can't remember) 1000 feet".

This week's forecast here has both of those as well as "possible shower",
"shower or two' and just plain "showers". Other times we might get a few
showers or even scattered showers. Personally I find one in the morning is
sufficient.

Jim

I need at least 7 more hours to post a new word. My apologies.
