View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2548: Vote for GROUGH

Daniel Widdis

One short of a score of definitions for GROUGH are presented below for
your edification and amusement. All but one are from the fertile minds
of your fellow players, the other from a reputable dictionary.

You have two votes to cast, preferably (in my opinion) rewarding those
fellow players mentioned in the previous paragraph for their ingenuity.
Because all good things must come to an end, there is a voting deadline
which, regardless of my ineptness of time zone calculations in the next
paragraph, will be about 36 hours from now at 17:00 UTC on Tuesday,
October 07, 2014.

According to my calculations, that deadline is 10:00 AM PDT on the US
West coast, 1:00 PM EDT on the US East Coast, 6:00 PM BST in the UK,
7:00 PM CEST in most of Europe including the Netherlands, and Wednesday
at 4:00 AM AEDT in Eastern Australia including Melbourne, and 6:00 AM
NZDT in New Zealand, including Wellington.

* * * GROUGH * * *

1. (colloq.) the currawong, a medium-sized passerine bird of the
Artamidae family; possibly named for its guttural call and superficial
resemblance to the chough (fam.///Corvidae/)
2. a narrow channel cut in the bank of a stream to divert the flow
through a flume for panning
3. (mountaineering) a natural channel or fissure in a peat moor; a
peat hag
4. a hardy forage grass, /Agrostis norvegis/, native to Scandinavia
5. a derogatory sailor's term for an incompetent officer
6. (of wine) having a bitter and muddy after-taste
7. [Eire; Gaelic] a dried-up lake bed
8. spiny fruit-bearing shrub
9. a seasonal marsh
10. bone marrow
11. elderly; senile
12. debilitated, sickly
13. [obs] a complaint or grievance
14. /Scots/ a low-lying meadow in a river valley
15. mineral pellets used in water-conditioning systems
16. a rise in the ground preventing the flow of water (see /slough/)
17. low brushy growth found in the pine barrens of the Northeastern U.S.
18. a plow with a removable coulter which can turn the soil to either
the right or the left
19. the smell given off by animal substances, esp. of a fatty or greasy
nature, when cooked or burnt. Also: any strong or unpleasant odour,
vapour, etc.

I've probably been sucked in by the dealer purposely keeping these two definitions together, but I'll go with them anyhow:

2. a narrow channel cut in the bank of a stream to divert the flow through a flume for panning
3. (mountaineering) a natural channel or fissure in a peat moor; a peat hag

How about:

2. a narrow channel cut in the bank of a stream to divert the flow through
a flume for panning

and

19. the smell given off by animal substances, esp. of a fatty or greasy
nature, when cooked or burnt. Also: any strong or unpleasant odour, vapour,
etc.
