View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2544: NISGUL results

Rules were made to be broken.

I want to start out this post by acknowledging Shani Naylor as the
rightful winner of the previous round. You all saw the bit of confusion
between scoring and my initial post before receiving the correction
message, and I deferred to the precedents justifying my continuation of
the round. I'll admit, it was mostly a selfish decision since I had
spent some time finding a word to deal and didn't want it to go to
waste. But I had the rules on my side, even though nobody had submitted
votes yet and backing out would have been a rather simple affair with
minimal confusion.

I did not realize then that this was Shani's first win, and while many
of us who have dealt multiple times might see it as a chore, a new
player rightfully views their first deal as a crowning achievement. I
deprived Shani of her day in the sun, and the pleasure of 15 or more
congratulatory messages with the submitted definitions. I regret my
decision to continue, and think in hindsight this was one place where
precedent should have been ignored.

But what's done is done. Sorry again, Shani, and heartfelt
congratulations on your win.

Now, to this round's results.

Only three players earned more than two votes. Efrem Mallach's
Zoroastrian spirit ties the dictionary's weak chicken with six votes and
earns him the next deal. Tim Lodge, one of the last three votes which
doubled my D3 into a D6 can take the 'real winner' laurels with his
unnatural six for the blue bull (no relation to a blue ox). And Dodi
Schultz deserves honorable mention, collecting four votes for her
mischievous troll.

The breakdown:

1. a unit of length defined as the height in 1958 of Tamas Nisgul, who
later became Chairman of the European Standards Institute
Vote from: Lodge
Submitted by: Morgan, who scores 1 + 2, total 3.
2. a cotton awning held up by ropes, often used to shade the entrance
of shops or cafés
Vote from: Shefler
Submitted by: Knoblauch, who scores natural 1.
3. an early-blooming alpine flower with alternating red and white petals

Daniel -- I have only just read your message after a long day at work --
thanks so much for this acknowledgement. Yes, it was supposed to be my
moment in the sun, which explains why I was peeved... I understand it was
all in the rules and if something similar happens again I'm sure I'll be
relaxed about it.

I've really been enjoying this game, and the virtual company of the players
scattered around the globe, and hope that continues.

best wishes
Shani

Well, it was in the "real rules" which are more precedent than requirement, and meant to avoid confusion when the one who posts might not be around for a day to correct wayward submissions or resolve confusion. And most dealers are happy to pass the buck. Not my case nor yours and there should always be room for exceptions.

I'm sure you'll win again soon. When you least expect it!

Fear not, Shani, your day in the sun will be recorded forever in Dixonary
annals, not to mention Mike's statistics. And I would now offer belated
congratulations, knowing that I neither helped nor hindered your victory
since I missed that round entirely.

As for the encyclopedic rules, seems to me they mostly say what you can do
more than what you must do.

Shani, your dealership was impressive, and not long after starting the
game! Well done.

Also - there are frequently times when an assigned Dealer really can't
deal. I stepped up for one round after i'd had to pass a deal to
someone, and i imagine just about any seasoned player will be happy to
let you in, and get that mostly-fun experience!
