View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2533 - VOTE NOW! - ABIGEUS

Judy Madnick
August 11th, 2014, 06:16 PM
Here are 18 definitions for the word ABIGEUS...but only one is correct. Please send your votes for what you believe are the two definitions most likely to have come from a dictionary before the deadline, which is 9 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. As usual, I will let you determine the time in your time zone. :-)

Any misspellings, weird spacing, etc., are my fault and not an indication of the accuracy of a particular definition. The formatting was fine in a test message sent to myself, so I hope you all receive it the way it was sent. :-)

1. a beginner at Greek who is still learning the alphabet [from the sounds of the first 3 letters of the Greek alphabet].

2. a shocking, or terrifying occurrence.

3. a small marsupial of western Australia, commonly known as the kangaroo bandicoot.

4. a type of javelin with a barbed point and leather handle.

5. a name generally believed to mean "beloved" and used for a second-born son in Medieval times (see also _Abigail_).

6. A male servant [Latinized from Heb _abigail_ - a maidservant].

7. A design of concentric circles used as an emblem of sovereignty among the Anasazi peoples.

8. (1) Accepting of all people and traits; (2) Indiscriminate.

9. An additional garment worn by Roman soldiers when operating in northern climes, made of wool and stretching from the ankle to well above the knee.

10. Cattle rustler.

11. Cudgel carried by Roman watchmen.

12. Having no gills.

13. _Hist._ A person owning the property of a former abbey after the dissolution of the monasteries.

14. Of or relating to female domestic servants.

15. Overly concerned with virtue or religious devotion.

16. Pertaining to molten rock that has solidified beneath the earth's surface.

17. [obs.] shivering or having chills.

18. (Zool.) the knot.

Good luck!

Hi Judy,

I think I will avoid all the Roman and Latin defs - too easy to think
that a word ending in -eus has to have Roman origin.

That still leaves me with a long list, and no idea. But then I realized
that today is the first, and probably last chance in my life to go for
chills, but not gills.
#12 and #17, please.

Cheers,
Hugo

The formatting's lovely, but no help in suggesting which of these
concoctions is the likely def. My wild guesses:
