As a moderator I make a plea to you all

The amount of spam that the forum is receiving has increased enormously in
recent weeks. I do not know about the other moderators but I am deleting
about 100 messages a day that the forum software flags as requiring
moderator attention. I do not have time even to scan the subject line of
that volume of mail so I am selecting all and marking the authors as banned
from the forum - because of the way google group software works that takes
real time (you have to load them all, there is no select all!) so..

..if you use an unrecognised email address you are very likely to find that
address banned from the forum and the mail itself will be automatically
deleted. Please be careful

If you need a new email address added then that is easy to do, just ask
(but use an old address!!!) or ask a moderator using a private email

Enough is enough.

I just changed the group settings to require membership for posting.
Non-members will get a bounce-back message indicating why their message
wasn't posted.

We had left it available for non-members to post and be moderated, in
order to help out the occasional ones of us who changed emails, or used
the (abandoned but still functional) tapcis.com interface, but when we
get to the point where those messages would be missed, there's no reason
to even fill up the moderation queue with non-member posts at all.

We'll still have a moderation queue but it will apply only to brand new
members, until they post something real as part of playing the game.

I'm sure i'm not the only one of us very grateful for all the work you
moderators put in!

One question -- how can a new player join the game with these new changes?
Must they send an email to a moderator, or what? Just seems like a good
bit of information to post in case we get interested (non-spammer) players!

It will now be a lot less. :)

Great question. Here are the primary ways you're supposed to join any
Google Group.

Option 1: Send an email to the address dixonary+subscribe (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com

Option 2: Go to https://groups.google.com/group/dixonary and there
should be a big blue button that says "Join this group!". They will be
prompted to type something indicating they are a human being and not a
spambot.

Moderators also have the ability to direct-add, or invite, members to
the list, except for people who have opted out of these features in
their Google accounts.

The only method that's being eliminated is the "send an email to the
group as if you were a member, and wait for a moderator to see it, and
add you as a member when they approve your post" method. I suspect that
what will happen if you do that now, is you'll get a bounce back from
the group with instructions on joining, instead.
