View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: "From" message line

Until a month or so ago, any mail I sent to the group, e.g. definition
votes, showed as being "from" my usual email address, which I've been using
here for years. _endash (AT) aol (DOT) com_ (mailto:endash (AT) aol (DOT) com) .

Suddenly, all my mail now shows that it is "from"
_Dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com_ (mailto:Dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com) .

Anyone know why this has happened and how I can get it changed back to work
like it seems to do for the rest of you?

I noticed that too, Dick, the last few rounds. It seems to be only you, not
other players.

Dick,

I found this, indicating it's a well known problem affecting mail to
mailing lists from aol.com and yahoo.com accounts.

I have not yet figured out what it actually means, or how to fix it, but
at least it's not mysterious.

Are you sending your email via AOL servers? That may or may not be
relevant...

Dick,

OK, I've looked into this a little more. Here's what I know:

- A few weeks ago, as an anti-spam measure, Yahoo implemented a new
DMARC policy, essentially telling the world's mailservers, "If a message
appears to come from a yahoo.com email address, but did not originate
from yahoo.com servers, reject it."
- The day after Yahoo did it, AOL did the same thing
- This obviously broke mailing list software, including Yahoo Groups,
Google Groups, and others. Apparently billions of emails were rejected
before someone said "oh, darn."
- To "fix" the issue, both Yahoo Groups and Google Groups are rewriting
the "From:" line of messages from aol.com and yahoo.com users. (This
rewriting is apparently controversial.) In your case, your new "From"
address appears as "EnDash via Dixonary <dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com>".
- Depending on the settings of the recipient's email client, they may or
may not see the "EnDash" portion.
- Your original email address still appears in the "X-Original-Sender"
field, which means "reply to all" could/would work on various clients
(but doesn't in many clients because of our group settings).

I do not yet see any way to "fix" the behavior, short of switching to an
email provider other than yahoo.com or aol.com (but there's no guarantee
other providers won't do the same thing soon).

I do hope (but am not optimistic) that email client programmers will
recognize the need to display the From address and update their software
appropriately.

Yes. I do play Dixonary on AOL. However, if I switch to using Firefox, the
mail client there is still ATT/Yahoo. Wonder why some of these techies
cannot leave well enough alone, especially as AOL is slow and crashy in the
first place.
