This is mainly for those of you who manage the Group. I can no longer
log in there using my guerri (AT) guerristevens (DOT) com account. I get a message
that says "something seems strange" or words to that effect. I can try
again and get the exact message if you need it. I then get a screen that
asks for my phone number, which I have never entered.

I enter my password correctly as far as I can tell.

It has been a long time since I tried to get directly into the site.
Perhaps something has changed.

Any ideas?

it looks OK to me

(The demand phone number is a Google thing so that they can text you
your password if necessary - as I don't have a mobile phone then I
always ignore it)

try your gmail account and see if that gets the same thing

I'm not sure how long it's been since you accessed the site, but there
have been several moves in recent years to consolidate everything into
users' "Google Plus" profiles. It's possible you never had such a
profile, since you've been accessing with a non-google address since
before that became a requirement.

It would be helpful if you could give us the exact error message you're
receiving, as you're likely not the only person who's ever seen it, and
searching Google for that error message usually offers some hints on
fixing it.

I would suggest just trying to log in to "groups.google.com" without
specifying the Dixonary group, and see if it's more helpful in
suggesting what may be the issue.

Time has passed and in order to make sure that I can access the group
directly if necessary, I gave up on trying to figure out the error. As
far as I can remember, Google's complaint was that I was accessing the
group from a different location. When I first got the error message, I
was away from home and accessing the group from the computer in the
hotel's business center. I don't know whether Google was complaining
about the actual physical location or the IP address.

When I got back home, I still got the same error message. I thought it
was odd that Google was complaining about location in the first place
because I would think that one should have the ability to access the
group from anywhere and the entry of the proper log-in information
should be sufficient. And I am guessing that it is not the actual
physical location it is complaining about unless they decided my home,
which is still in the same place as it has been for years, was different
from the last place I'd tried to log in from, i.e. the hotel.

Anyway, Google's idea for a solution was to change my password. Does
this make sense? If they think I'm not me, they won't let me log into
the group but they will let me (or the "not me") change my password???
So I changed my password. Then they wanted a cell phone number. I
understand that they want a way to contact me if they have a problem but
I don't give out my cell number because my cell is turned off unless I
want to use it, which is rarely and any urgent message they might send
would not be seen for, possibly, weeks. They were fixated on this,
rather than allowing me to bypass it, so I just exited.

I sent them a message complaining about the cell phone thing and the
fact that if one doesn't have a cell phone, one cannot, evidently, use
the Google groups. They have not seen fit to respond.

At any rate, I can now log into the group, so at least it is working.
Except for my more recent quibble: I go to the group with
http://groups.google.com/group/Dixonary and I get a screen with a list
of topics. If I click "sign in", enter my Email address and password, it
signs me in, but it doesn't return me to the page with the list of
topics. Instead I have to choose the group. Again, even though I was
just there. They do show me "recently viewed" and "recently posted to".
How do they know this? It's not cookies, evidently.

I am using http://groups.google.com/group/Dixonary (that's my bookmark).
What I see as Firefox gets ready to go there is
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/Dixonary in the URL line.

I tried the URL in your message, which works but I have to choose the
group. In any event, it is not helpful for solving my original problem,
which has now gone away. At least here at home. What might happen
elsewhere is unknown. I wonder whether Google recognizes the computer
itself? If I have time, I'll try my iPad.

You are right about Google's relatively recent changes to manage people
who use their services. They want us to be part of their herd, and I
have never been much of a herd person. I am living in the south now and
trying to clean up my language, otherwise I would have a few choice
things to say.
