View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2506: Vote for IKAT definitions

Efrem Mallach
May 2nd, 2014, 09:47 PM
Fellow addicts,

Here are seventeen definitions for IKAT: sixteen created by your fellow players, one from a well-regarded dictionary. They are in order by character count (which may not correspond to visual length because of differences in character width). Please vote for two of them by public reply to this message:

1. kwashiorkor
2. [Turk.] a type of tobacco
3. busily or actively engaged
4. the colonnade of a Turkish mosque
5. in Ottoman architecture: an octagon
6. an embellishment or ornament in speech
7. fabric in which yarns were tie-dyed before weaving
8. a thick, sweet date custard, often with almond flavoring
9. a set of tuned gongs or bells in a Javanese gamelan ensemble
10. Small, often fried food preparations eaten as snacks in the Middle East
11. an indoor plant nursery; especially applied to greenhouses for tree saplings
12. a section of the Orthodox liturgy corresponding approximately to the Latin Sanctus
13. a demon in the Bhagavad Gita who tempts Prince Arjuna from the path of righteousness
14. a weight loss and fitness regimen consisting of a vegan diet and two hours of Tai Chi per week.
15. a type of arrow used in a crossbow; also, by extension, intercontinental ballistic missile. (Rus.)
16. one of three carnivorous snail species of the genus Perrottetia, native to northern and northeastern Thailand
17. Internet Kitten Amusement Technology: charting how many times a cat video is watched and shared from YouTube in marketing theory
18. One of two varieties of Japanese syllabic writing, the characters of which are more angular than hiragana, used chiefly in scientific and official documents and for words adopted from other languages

New players are eligible to vote, as are old players who did not submit a definition for any reason at all.

The deadline for submissions is 8 pm U.S. Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, May 4 - a bit over 45 hours from now. I think that corresponds to the following times in other parts of the world:

Continental Europe Summer Time: 2 am, Monday, May 5
British Summer Time: 1 am, Monday, May 5
U.S. Central Daylight Time: 7 pm, Sunday, May 4
U.S. Pacific Daylight Time: 5 pm, Sunday, May 4
Australian Eastern Standard Time: 10 am, Monday, May 5

Please confirm the conversion for your time zone before relying on it. I will start tabulating the results as soon as possible after 8 pm in my US EDT time zone, allowing for somewhat unpredictable commitments that evening. If you haven't seen the results yet, feel free to vote even if the deadline has passed. I'll accept all votes that come in until I'm far enough into the process that I can't stand the thought of starting over.

Hmm many are plausible, a few are tempting and a couple should stay behind
after school (you know who you are). I'll take a pair from the middle for
fabric dyed in custard, 7 and 8

I probably need to do 14 to lose weight, and someone has to vote for 17,
so I'll volunteer.

4 and 5 for a Turkish delight ...

(17 is nice -- but seems not likely to have made it into a dictionary)

You did. I mistakenly gave the number of player submissions as the total. There were 17 player submissions, hence a total of 18 definitions. Sorry, but that shouldn't cause any problems with voting.

Sometimes they all seem believable. This time, they all appear unlikely.
But, trusting that our usually efficient dealer did actually include the
real def, I'll take a stab at

2. [Turk.] a type of tobacco

and

7. fabric in which yarns were tie-dyed before weaving

Number 18 is suggesting a synonym for katakana, but I'm not buying it. I'll
take the equally erroneous 4 and 5:
