Here are sixteen definitions of ASHLAR to peruse - of which kindly vote for
two unless you now the word. Before 10 a.m. on Thursday as I play bridge
soon after <g> For ACBL types, I am the guy who has more gold points
than black ones.

1. slaked lime
2. hewn or squared stone
3. A loosely woven silk with a crisp finish.
4. A fungus that grows on Indian banyan trees
5. a commune established by a fraternal organization
6. small vessel for measuring or serving medicine
7. an altar assistant in the Russian Orthodox rites
8. of or resembling the hollow of the hand, cupped; lying as if in a cup
9. Holder for inks and paints used in preparing mediaeval illuminated
manuscripts.
10. (Obs) alternative common name for Fraxinus excelsior, the European Ash
11. a temporary shelter or bivouac constructed from tree branches and
loose vegetation such as bracken.
12. a North American stick insect, or "walking stick"; usually tan or
light brown, rarely light green
13. a fast-growing hybrid hardwood plantation tree, supposedly combining
superior characteristics of ash and poplar
14. [Phys.] a device for measuring the radioactive decay rate of a sample
of an element, using tuned laser impulses
15. a five-stringed instrument once prominent in Indian classical music
but now little heard, having been largely supplanted by the many-stringed
sitar.
16. A kind of stuffing for upholstered furniture, mattresses, etc., in
which curled shreds of wood are substituted for curled hair.

Major thunderstorm here now -- so all errors are the fault of the dealer,
and do not infer anything from any def appearing "odd." Some of this is
done with UPS ower.

Dave

I would hope 9 has a name, and I love the un-numbered "many-stringed"
instrument in 15.
