You folks have outdone yourselves this round. Here are 16 very creative definitions
of poronkusema, one of which is actually real. Vote for your two favorites no later
than 5 PM EDT, Sunday, April 6.

1. a type of permafrost consisting primarily of loess and organic
material, believed to sequester large amounts of carbon.

2. [Jap.] kielbasa; Polish sausage.

3. a Hungarian dish of lamb, peppers, and dumplings flavored with a
variety of spices.

4. [Arab.] insult referring to the genitals of a person's mother
(brought back from the Middle East after WW I by English soldiers).

5. an infection of finger or toenail cuticles.

6. [Lap.] the distance a reindeer can travel before needing to stop to urinate.

7. extreme insignificance.

8. a hereditary skin disorder in which skin growths caused by the human
papilloma virus (HPV) spread out of control.

9. [Obs. nonce-wd] a route map [Gk. poros - way, distance; sema - seed]

10. an informal fallacy of logic where the consequence of the phenomenon
is claimed to be its root cause (see also circular cause and
consequence).

11. a monotypic plant genus containing the single species P. luffa, the
fibrous fruit of which is dried, bleached, and used as a bath sponge
or for scrubbing.

12. [Esperanto] fiercely loyal.

13. a Finnish dish similar to Icelandic kæstur hákarl (‘rotten shark’)
made from the fermented flesh of the sleeper shark, Somniosus
microcephalus.

14. a group of American Indian petroglyphs encountered in 1805 by
explorers William Lewis and Meriwether Clark in what is now the
American state of Montana.

15. a hidden building for the storage of grain, often high on a cliff
face and built of stone or adobe.

16. a disagreeable yellowish brown color.

I still question whether this is a real word. :-) So, having no clue, I'll guess at these:

1. a type of permafrost consisting primarily of loess and organic
material, believed to sequester large amounts of carbon.

11. a monotypic plant genus containing the single species P. luffa, the
fibrous fruit of which is dried, bleached, and used as a bath sponge
or for scrubbing.

There being no plausible definitions other than my own (modesty forbids ...), and since my stomach tells me it's lunchtime, I'll vote for 2 and 3.

9 and 10 seem equally unlikely ...

9. [Obs. nonce-wd] a route map [Gk. poros - way, distance; sema - seed]
10. an informal fallacy of logic where the consequence of the phenomenon is
claimed to be its root cause (see also circular cause and consequence).

Thanks,

I vote for 10 and 11, the latter because I grew luffa for a couple of years.

Totally at sea on this one, and relying on a probably flawed process of
elimination, I'll take a stab at:

11. a monotypic plant genus containing the single species P. luffa, the
fibrous fruit of which is dried, bleached, and used as a bath sponge or for
scrubbing.

and

15. a hidden building for the storage of grain, often high on a cliff face
and built of stone or adobe.
