An eclectic bunch of definitions for a short word indeed! Kindly vote for two of them (and the real definition is actually in the list!) before noon Eastern on Thursday 22 September. As always, all errors are the fault of the dealer. IF you thought you were a DQ for any reason -- just pick a different def. You were probably wrong anyway! <g>

1. A gate.

2. Creative energy.

3. An illiterate person

4. [Sp] Son of (from Arabic _ibn_)

5. [Hebr.] Chosen of God.

6. A wasp or hornet's nest.

7. [Malay.] An area of land approximately 14 hectares.

8. Unit of acoustic absorption of one square foot of a perfect absorber.

9. $100 worth of drugs. [<Benjamin Franklin, portrait on the hundred dollar bill].

10. A type of squared-off interlocking hardwood beam used in the construction of barns, stables, etc.

11. The most acute of several angled branch positions that can be trained into a bonsai tree; the others are pin, yuki, binji, and sai.

12. 1. the promontory produced by a bend in a river. 2. by extension, a castle built on such a promotory, with cliffs on three sides.

13. [Botany] The flattened border of some stems, fruits, and seeds, or either one of the two side petals of certain flowers in the pea family.

14. The inner room or parlor of a house with two rooms.

15. [Scot.] a highland glen (also bean or beann)

18. [Scot.] A hillside; a slope.

I am certain it's one of the Scottish defs, which is why I will vote for 15
and 16, and then go look it up to see how wrong I was.

5 because I almost believe it, and 11 because I don't, but
would like to.

Hi Dave,

Hmmm, several very plausible sounding defs. Avoiding the Scottish
definitions, I still see four that are correct.

I'll go for the Japanese and the Slang.

9. $100 worth of drugs. [<Benjamin Franklin, portrait on the
hundred dollar bill].

11. The most acute of several angled branch positions that can be
trained into a bonsai tree; the others are pin, yuki, binji, and sai.

Best, Hugo

1 and 13.

Like so many others, I'll take 9 because it's too clever to pass up
and 11 because it's almost plausible.

3 and 7 look sufficiently unlikely.

I'll throw votes at # 9 and # 14 before Hurricane Rita makes landfall
and blows my part of the world away.
