or refractive material" [Hooke, Micrographia 1665]

8: Astrol. The prevention of a conjunction of two planets by the
retrogression of one of them

Let's go for 15 and 17

Steve Graham
The first task of an editor is to save the writer from him- or herself, no
matter how painful the process.

15: a process used to restore felt hats
(Since Oregon is the "Beaver State," I "felt" it was appropriate. )

17: the bending of light rays as they pass through a prism, lens, or other
optical device

Rightly or wrongly I'm dispensing with any of the refraction variations
including polarisation. Instead I'll opt for ice and felt - 2 and 15

Having eliminated those I know there's some other word for, as well as
those that are unthinkable, I'm left with:

Millie -

I'll go with the crowd -

2: The fusion of two blocks of ice by pressure

and

5: [obs. rare] = refraction (qv) "the light pathway caused by a
refrangent or refractive material" [Hooke, Micrographia 1665]

Thanks,

Chuck

Since staring at them for another hour or so isn't likely to help, I'll try 13 and 14.
