View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2477 MEECHERING Defs - Vote now!

Tim Lodge
January 25th, 2014, 04:49 AM
I hope this message goes out- there are currently five grandchildren,
attached to various pods, pads, PCs, PSPs, and phones, hammering the life
out of my internet connection! I'll send them out for a run soon.

Anyway, here are 16 imaginative and carefully crafted defs of the word
MEECHERING, only one of which came from my dictionary. Please vote for
your two favourites by public reply to this message before the deadline of:

19:00 UTC on Sunday 26th January
20:00 CET
2:00 PM EST
11:00 AM PST
06:00 on Monday 27th in Melbourne

-- Tim L

*** MEECHERING ***

1. gilt embroidery.

2. sneaking, furtive.

3. pestering, provoking.

4. a surfeit of complaints.

5. a form of tobacco used in Dutch Guiana.

6. a small Indonesian coin worth 1/100 rupiah.

7. seeking salvation through extreme physical pain.

8. preparing and ironing the cloth of a snooker table.

9. the practice of writing notes or other marks in the page margins of
borrowed books.

10. weaving together branches of adjacent trees to produce a high-level
‘hedge on legs”.

11. a whitish bituminous compound used chiefly for caulking pale
timbers, esp. of yachts.

12. a large, salt-water fish that lives in the coastal waters of
southern North America.

13. a loud, pulsed vocalization most often associated with young
primates when fearful or distressed.

14. the process for allocating land, which had been formally purchased
from the Pequots, to individual families within the Plymouth Colony.

15. a fishing technique in which a weighted and baited hook is cast out
and allowed to sink to the bottom, after which the hook is reeled in slowly
in order to keep it from rising.

16. a form of urban dance originating in New York in the late 1970s,
combining a Charleston-like step with bends, spins, and moves in which the
body is briefly supported by the hands.

What's interesting to me is this: Recently, all of your messages have
arrived in duplicate. But not *this* one. Only one copy! (Did you do
something differently? or was it GG?)

I always hate it when I narrow the definitions down to three -- and eliminate the "real" definition. :-( We'll see what happens this time.

10. weaving together branches of adjacent trees to produce a high-level hedge on legs.

15. a fishing technique in which a weighted and baited hook is cast out and allowed to sink to the bottom, after which the hook is reeled in slowly in order to keep it from rising.

I think it's a combination of Google Groups and me! If I reply to a
specific message in a thread, GG ticks the box to send a CC to the original
author of the message, and I've been forgetting to untick it. I have
remembered this time, so you should get only one copy of this one.

When I start a new thread, there's no CC box, so you should get only one
email copy.

Ah, I think I understand now. You're replying at the website instead of
with an e-mail client from your own computer; is that right? And of course
it can happen only with replies, then?
