View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2476 -- CHIASMUS -- Vote Now, Please
EnDash@aol.com
January 22nd, 2014, 12:27 PM
Our players have craftily created the following devilishly clever 18
definitions, of which 17 are spurious and only 1 taken from a dictionary. Your
job is to vote for any two of your liking, and post your vote as a public
(i.e. to the group) message.
Deadline for receipt of your votes will be Thursday, January 23, at 4:00 PM
-- or the equivalent time at your location. Best of luck to all.
1: a rhetorical inversion of the second of two parallel structures,
2: a woodwind with a vertical pipe and 8 finger holes and a whistle
mouthpiece
3: [Psy] The interplay between two personalities - specifically only
two personalities are involved and in the classical definition they are
both aware of each other
4: the aromatic rhizome of the sweet flag, used for medicinal purposes
and yielding an oil used in perfumery
5: [obs] A misleading argument, e.g. a "red herring."
6: practice of West African magic
7: a nervous tick consisting of an involuntary jerking of the head
8: cancellation, as of a document
9: a state of mental alertness, often associated with intense creativity
10: a tribal migration
11: the longitudinal groove that separates the left and right hemispheres
of the brain
12: a style of painting that de-emphasizes both sharp outlines and
shadows
13: theological reasoning to resolve apparent contradictions among two or
more Biblical passages
14: an infection of the eye resulting in pustules on the inside or outside
of the eyelid; a stye
15: a spectre or apparition, esp. one associated with noxious vapor
rising from the ground
16: a dead end, or stalemate position reached by two or more opponents in
an argument
17: a skin condition similar to eczema
18: [Obs.] profound sadness; depression
Note: As you are aware, one of our players has sent an entry which was
lost or not received by the dealer, but has not resent it; so it could not be
included in this list. The situation will be outlined in a note to the
"results" posting on Friday.

I'll take 17 and 18 please, although my experience is that most synonyms for
"eczema" barely scratch the surface.

For want of any better ideas, I'll take two mental states, 9 and 18:
9: a state of mental alertness, often associated with intense creativity
18: [Obs.] profound sadness; depression

1 because the definition ends in a comma, and 3 because it incorrectly uses
an en dash rather than an em dash.

3: [Psy] The interplay between two personalities - specifically only two
personalities are involved and in the classical definition they are both

Hope this is on time. I assumed the 4 pm in this message is in the same time zone as the deadline for definitions was, but we all know about assumptions!
In order to minimize wear on the higher digit keys on my keyboard, I'll go with 1 and 11.
