December 27th, 2013, 02:21 PM
Through the wonders of modern technology, I'm posting this while hurtling
down Interstate 20 (near Tyler, Texas) at 75 miles per hour. (Yes, I
recruited my wife to drive for a bit while I post this!)

Eighteen of you have joined the dictionary to produce 19 definitions for
WINTERBOURNE. Please vote for two, by public reply to this message, before
deadline, which is whenever-I-wake-up, but no earlier than 11:30 AM EST on
Sunday, December 29, 2013, or 8:30 AM PST.

1. a Gaelic feast
2. growing at high altitudes
3. a high-arching chip shot used in golf
4. anything light or insubstantial; feeble person
5. a stream flowing only after heavy rainfall, esp. in
winter
6. a variety of crabapple noted for its firm flesh and
sweet taste
7. the lily of the valley; so called for its unusually

winter spirits while welcoming the return of the sun

Typically, not a single def sounds remotely possible. This time around,
practically all of them appear to be fitting definitions of the word (the
contribution of the undersigned excepted, of course). After much agonized
consideration, flipping of coins, flinging of darts, and winnowing to the
half-dozen most likely candidates, I'll cast my votes for

13. a fern of class _polypodiopsida_, native to the British Isles and
Scandinavia

and

14. potato blight, esp. that caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans

—Dodi

P.S.: Tbird's spellchecker didn't like a number of the words above. For the
fern class, it wondered if perhaps I meant "polypeptide"; it wondered if I
might like to replace Phytophthora with "photograph".
