Mike Shefler

Here are 18 wonderful defs for fluffit, one of which came from an actual
dictionary.
Vote for your 2 favorites no later than 10 AM EST, Thursday, December 19.

1. in thought experiments, an as-yet unknown entity; a place holder that
will hopefully be replaced when possible.

2. a flat-headed nail used to secure iron hoops to a cask or barrel.

3. a large black woollen shawl worn over the head or shoulders.

4. a false wall in a recording studio constructed specifically for flush
mounting monitor speakers and as an alternative to soffit mounting.

5. a batch of wine that sours or develops mold.

6. a Southeast Asian bird, believed to be extinct.

7. a flibbertigibbet.

8. fabric covering the frame and legs of a bed or sofa [also _fluffet_].

9. a drain-pipe.

10. the movement of fishes' fins.

11. an inverted tęte-bęche pair of stamps.

12. a brand of kitchen whip.

13. something annoying or pointless.

14. a pompous, self-important person.

15. a Middle-Eastern sweetmeat flavored with pistachio.

16. a sailing manoeuvre in which one luffs deliberately in order to avoid
missing a buoy.

17. an expired British trademark for cotton candy.

18. of the frequency at which acoustic resonance occurs in an enclosed
space.

I'll go for #1 because there needs to be a word like that and #11 because I
don't know what it means

I was taken by the thought of flagellation in the kitchen (12), but I'll
award my votes to the drain-pipe and the pompous person, 9 and 14:

9. a drain-pipe

14. a pompous, self-important person.

I propose a rule change that will allow us to vote for as many as we
want - way too many definitions in this round that are desirable in one
way or another.

Forced to choose, I vote for 4 and 7.

I can't remember the last time I heard the word "flibbertigibbet".

I'll go for 4 and 7.

Good word, interesting defs. Only four seem possible, though. I've probably
picked the wrong two:

and

I chortled over 16: if you make a manoeuvre to avoid missing something
that you're not supposed to hit, you could be said to have fluffed it.
But a fluff is always accidental, never deliberate; and if I had played
that definition in this round I would have spelt it maneuver. So, a
chortle, but no vote.

Portmanteau words are almost never it, but I still vote for 4, the flush
soffit. And halve it for 2 for the other vote.

The thought of kitchen whips is intriguing, if one is into that sort of thing, but I'll vote for the flighty, pointless 7 and 13.

Mike -

I'll go for the popular -

4. a false wall in a recording studio constructed specifically for flush

and

9. a drain-pipe.

Thanks,

Chuck

Contrarily I'll take a nail and a pipe as being the least fluffy items - 2
and 9
