What this list lacks in length it makes up for in creativity. Good luck
finding the real def among these 16, one of which really came from a
dictionary. Vote for your 2 favorites no later than 10 AM, Sunday, December 8.

1. migratory fishes, which have their stated times of going from
fresh-water to salt and returning, as the salmon, &c.

2. a dealer in high-end goods, especially silks [Italian, "silk
master"].

3. a class of ancient Roman priests, subordinate to the _rex sacrorum_
and responsible for _augures_ and _haruspices_.

4. ritual lamentations at a funeral, often by professional mourners,
consisting of weeping, wailing, and beating of the breast.

5. horn-like protuberances on the head of the male okapi, derived from
ossified cartilage.

6. a sort of love song or light impromptu ballad. [Obs.]

7. [It.] arenas for yacht racing (obs.)

8. sour wine resembling vinegar.

9. [obs] a meeting to elect officers.

10. downward water flows as from gargoyles, fountains, or similar
architectural conduits.

11. a rumbling noise produced by the movement of gas through the
intestines.

12. a mental state brought on by consuming toxic mushrooms which is
similar to sleep but more resistant to interruption.

13. [Obs.] chain-link fences.

14. alternate name for wooly opossums, found from Mexico to Brazil.

15. the passages between a Roman temple and its catacombs.

16. animals that have a recurring annual back-and-forth migration [Gk.
_kata_ down + _ana_ up + _dromus_ running]

The list came to my mailbox as one long paragraph. In case anyone else got it the same way, here it is reformatted with each definition on its own line.

More than likely I'm wrong, but I'll fall for the Roman priests and the
water spouts, 3 and 10:

3. a class of ancient Roman priests, subordinate to the _rex sacrorum_ and
responsible for _augures_ and _haruspices_.

10. downward water flows as from gargoyles, fountains, or similar
architectural conduits.

Besides length, the list lacks at least two other things: normal formatting
and my definition, which was submitted almost two hours before the deadline.

Several votes have come to my mailbox in duplicate (not sure whose they
were, since I no longer have them, but there were at least three before
this one). Glen's, below, is the latest. It was addressed to Dixonary with
a cc: to Dixonary. That strikes me as really weird.

Haven't the slightest notion. I think I've eliminated a dozen of them, and
(it's dart-throwing time) here are two of the four remaining:

2. a dealer in high-end goods, especially silks [Italian, "silk master"].

9. [obs] a meeting to elect officers.

11. a rumbling noise produced by the movement of gas through the intestines.

and

15. the passages between a Roman temple and its catacombs.
