View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2461: ZAYAT - Definition List

Christopher Carson
November 28th, 2013, 06:31 PM
I hope all are kicked back digesting dinner and enjoying the day. We're
looking forward to having our daughter, her husband and our two incredibly
cute New Jersey granddaughters here for dinner.

But in the meantime, we have a total of 20 incredibly clever and creative
definitions of ZAYAT for your voting pleasure. One of them actually came
from a real-life dictionary. You are invited to vote for your two
favorites, by public reply to this message, before deadline, which is 4:00
pm EST on Saturday, November 30, 2013 which on the west coast will be
1:00 pm..

1. A Navaho Indian ceremony welcoming young males into
manhood.

2. A state-owned mechanized farm of the former Soviet
Union paying wages to the workers.

3. A beverage flavored with the juice of the date palm
fruit.

4. [Iraq] The winter solstice festival.

5. An Assyrian stepped pyramid.

6. [Obsolete slang] The thunder-like sound of a distant
railroad train booming: caused by resuming travel with
slack in the couplings

7. A raisin pudding.

8. A monument or plinth in the shape of a truncated
pyramid.

9. The cord around the crown of an Arab headdress.

10. [S. Burma] the local manifestation of an animistic
spirit, often a tree.

11. A staged tower of triangular pyramid or tetrahedral
form in which each successive story is smaller than that
below it, so as to leave a terrace all round; compare
ziggurat.

12. A public hall or shed for worship, meetings, or shelter.

13. A tropical tree whose bark is used to make a bitter
medicinal product.

14. Ukranian shawl, traditionally with colored stripes.

15. A children's game, similar to hide-and-go-seek, popular in the Middle
East.

16. A wise person.

17. A Muslim center of learning,

18. A minor religious holiday celebrated by Alawite Muslims.

19. an inscription or design woven into the fabric of a rug
identifying the weaver. --Mike Shefler

20. [Leb.] A crude shelter used for livestock and the poor.

Yup, dinner is digested (or at least eaten!), and we're back from our daughter and son-in-law's home after enjoying Thanksgiving/Chanukah with 11 others (besides my husband and me).

Now for my votes:

5. An Assyrian stepped pyramid.

8. A monument or plinth in the shape of a truncated
pyramid.

There's a slip of the keyboard in def number 19.

I'll go for the communist farm and the sage: 2 and 16.

2. A state-owned mechanized farm of the former Soviet Union paying wages
to the workers.

Slip is right. Darn! I hate it when that happens and after reviewing the defs twice. Two dealer points and an abject apology to Mike.

Hi Chris,

My picks: one of the pyramids, and one of Middle East references

> pyramid.

> 15. A children's game, similar to hide-and-go-seek, popular in the Middle
> East.

Oh, and may I propose some dealer points for Mike?

Cheers,
Hugo

Yup, I noticed. After voting. (I always vote before reading on, as I
don't want to be influenced by other peoples' picks)

I'll avoid the religious and Middle Eastern stuff and take my chances on
numbers 2 and 14.

2. A state-owned mechanized farm of the former Soviet
Union paying wages to the workers.

14. Ukranian shawl, traditionally with colored stripes.

Hm. I usually read other people's picks as they arrive, and they always
confuse me. Maybe I should switch to your system.

l suppose I should confess that I unsportingly tally up the votes before
voting myself, to see if a tactical vote might be in order. Or, very
occasionally, to start casting about for a new word.

Chris, Tim:
So 19 is itself a kind of zayat being an example of its own definition,
like TLA.

Like Dodi, for me reading the votes adds to the interest, and sometimes to
the confusion, of the round while I decide where to bestow my precious and
priceless votes. (In this instance I'm still deciding. I still like 19.)

You just know it'll turn out to be "the other one"

Vox pop says it's 2 or 8, and I don't believe either. And there are far
too many pyramids. So I'll go for the highly unlikely 12 and 19.
