The Nigerian e-mail scammers seem to have retreated from the scene -- only
to be replaced by a somewhat different sucker-bait scam.

Yesterday I received my second call from a different person but with the
same script, so I though I'd mention it in case they try to victimize you,
too.

The call begins with a heavily-accented voice (one was male, one female)
ascertaining that he or she is speaking with (insert given name here). Then
you are told that the caller is representing "The United States Government
Office of Grants (there is, of course, no such thing.)

You have been selected to receive a large grant, the caller goes on. About
this time, or sooner, is when I hang up. Obviously, like the now retired
Nigerians, this is another con to obtain personal information with which to
defraud you out of your money.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Thanks, Dick! Of course this could be those same old Nigerians with a new
gimmick . . .
