View Full Version : [Dixonary] Rolling weird

I've just been poking around websites, and here's what I found:

Rolling scores for Jim's just-finished round, 2447, do NOT appear on the
Dixonary page at the GoogleGroups site, nor, apparently, have they been
distributed via e-mail. At least I haven't received them, or the scores
from Judy's round before that. (I think the two go together, yes?)

But the 2447 rolling scores DO appear at the tapcis.com website, which
presumably mirrors what appears at the GoogleGroups site. (I don't know why
this is still being done, BTW. It's a leftover from a situation that
obtained a decade ago and doesn't seem, to me at least, to have any
relevance now. Other than Dixonary dupes, the site is totally unused and
has been for at least five or six years.) How can something that's not at
the GG site be "mirrored" elsewhere?

Why would the rolling scores not appear at Dixonary's site or be
distributed by e-mail in the usual way, but appear only at a "mirror" site?

A very confused

Dodi

I happily accept what you say (without really understanding; you know about
me and technology), but: How come I never received rolling scores for
rounds 2445 and 2446? (And neither did at least two others, Efrem and
Chris.) I assume that something must have gone wrong. Yes?

Dodi,

The "mirror" goes both ways. Something posted at tapcis is eventually
mailed to the group, which is what you observed.

As a counterexample to the absolute "totally unused", Mike actually does
post the rolling (and total) scores directly to the tapcis.com site using
the "[code]" text formatting instruction, which seems to be the only way
he's got the alignment to work properly on Google Groups so far. It also
explains why you saw something posted there which took some finite amount
of time (usually less than 30 minutes) to be emailed to the group.

When I (rarely) deal, I also like to check the site when collating votes.
Its threading capabilities are much better than those at the Google Groups
site or my own client -- all votes appear in a single thread.

I'm happy to change mirroring, public settings, whatever, if there's a
demand to do so. However, I see no harm in leaving it the way it is for
the few who use capabilities at that site for which Google provides no
viable alternative.

Since they made it to the group, the problem for non-delivery was between
the group and your (and Efrem's) computers. There are a few possible
explanations, and most probably have to do with efforts at various levels
to eliminate spam, which are imperfect.
