Is there anyone here who uses the AVG Virus software? It seems to have
gone beserk on my computer. At first it appeared to have changed some of
my settings for AVG itself. But it is possible that it did so during the
most recent updating run, although that would be new behavior.

The next thing I noticed was that in the layout of its main screen, at
the bottom there are two buttons, one saying "scan now" and the other
saying "protection is up to date". The latter used to say "Update now"
or something like that. Again this might have changed during a recent
update.

Finally tonight the behavior that had me wanting to put my fist through
the screen, weep, or both. I was browsing around and all of a sudden
everything seemed to stop. I couldn't scroll up or down or even switch
to a new page. Normally this doesn't bother me because we have Verizon
4G and from time to time it goes AWOL or SWOL (slow without leave). But
this time that didn't seem to be the case. So I used the Task Manager to
shut down Firefox (yes, and ancient version). When I started Firefox
again, I noticed it now had an AVG toolbar and was showing an AVG search
page! So at some point, AVG changed my Firefox settings, without asking
me. I managed to fix that, at least I think I did, but for all I know it
may reappear next time I run a scan or update AVG.

Did I mention that AVG apparently ignores my setting for automatic
scheduling, and updates when it feels like it? I think I have fixed
that, but then again, I thought I'd fixed it a day or two ago.

If you hear screaming, it will be me.

adding extras when you update almost anything is standard procedure
nowadays. I always (repeat, always) look at any installation and turn off
"install yahoo/adobe/avg etc etc toolbars" else all the browser is full of
competing toolbars with no room for what you want to look at.. in firefox,
view toolbars does allow you to turn them off but you then also may have to
adjust your addons to get rid of them

... in terms of SWOL: AVG on a new installation does a whole machine scan
sometime soon after it has installed and that may have been what happened -
the newer versions of AVG have a set sensitivity to allow the scan to take
longer and allow you to do something while it is happening or at the other
extreme shut you out and complete the scan faster

I did, but I had a few problems, and I've switched to Avast except for an XP VM I use occasionally;
I'll probably switch that too in due course. The only specific problem I can remember was that it
froze in the middle of an update, stopping everything; only the power-off button had any effect.

Best wishes,
Tim Bourne.

This morning I found out that when I opened something in Firefox, an AVG
Search tab opened along with it. So I closed that tab, but when I used
the shortcut to open a new tab, the new tab opened with AVG search! I
figured out how to change that behavior, and things appear to be back to
normal, at least for now.

So one the one hand I am grateful that I am not going haywire myself,
and doing strange things in some kind of sleepwalking/zombie state, but
on the other hand, I do not like this kind of behavior on the part of
any software. I suppose one could argue that AVG (at least my version)
is free, and therefore I should be more forgiving of this kind of behavior.

This is right up there with some entity taking a poll and at the end
there is wording that says "thanks for taking our poll, and this means
you are eligible to receive our XYZ Emails". Not "we are going to send
you these Emails whether you want them or not". And not "would you like
to receive...". GRRR!

The upshot is that now I am reluctant to update AVG.
