View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2425: INRO - time to vote

Tim B
July 20th, 2013, 05:27 AM
Here we have a wonderful collection of no fewer than 18 ingenious definitions, plus one that somehow
found its way into a dictionary. Please vote for TWO definitions, as a public forum message (in
reply to this one), before the deadline, which is 8 am BST on Monday 22 July. That's 0700 GMT/UTC,
and probably 3 am in New York and midnight in LA; other times are left as an exercise for the
interested player.

New players are welcome, even if you didn't enter a definition this round. Don't look in a dictionary.

1: a feast [Maori]

2: the next item in a queue.

3: the southern-most canton in Switzerland.

4: packing made from inferior or waste materials.

5: Institute National de Reserche d'Optique (Paris)

6: an outcrop of rock or stones surrounded by an ice field.

7: a type of men's sash worn with traditional Japanese robes.

8: a curved projection attached to the collar of a draft horse.

9: the government seizure of private property without due process of law.

10: a style of Japanese silk embroidery used mainly to decorate religious items.

11: _Mil._ in process of transfer to or from an area of combat. [abbr "in rotation"]

12: a mixture of pebbles, hair, straw, sand, and mud used like adobe by primitive tribes.

13: a type of solar-powered water pump, found uniquely at the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

14: a rectangular architectural element that fills the space between two triglyphs in a Doric frieze.

15: in telegraphy, a code word always repeated twice to signal "message received but please re-send."

16: approach to marital/couples counseling, focused on small achievable goals rather than major
changes; from INcremental Relationship Optimization.

17: collectively, the rolls of deeds on parchment in which the Scottish nobility and gentry
subscribed allegiance to Edward I. of England, A. D. 1296.

18: a small set of decorative, usually lacquered, nested containers for pills, ink, seals, etc.,
once hung from the obi by a silk cord, as part of traditional Japanese dress.

19: a dance form developed in postwar Japan which rejects Eastern and Western dance conventions,
expressing intense emotions through slow, controlled, and sometimes distorted movements.

Best wishes,
Tim Bourne.

Let's try the long Japanese ones: 18 and 19. If nothing else, their submitters deserve points for creativity!
