View Full Version : [Dixonary] >>> Vote for BUMB <<<
Glen Boswell
May 11th, 2013, 12:20 PM
So, here we have 16 devilishly delicious definitions of BUMB, cunningly
crafted by 18 of the wiliest wordsmiths on the interweb, and a dictionary.
Please vote for you two favourites by public reply to this post, by Sunday
12th May 8pm BST. I think this equates to 3pm EDT, 12pm PDT and 5am Monday
AEST.
Good luck . . .
1 Extremely rapid plant growth, leading to deformities of the plant
itself or its fruit.
2 The finishing stitch on a zipper or placket.
3 Material removed from a stable during cleaning, consisting primarily
of straw, hay and horse droppings.
4 The electrical contact foot of a light bulb.
5 Cargo jettisoned from a ship but marked by buoys for recovery.
6 A pimple.
7 An energy-saving device that works by automatically directing light
toward the areas in a room that are in use, so that the light output can be
lower without people noticing.
8 In pipeline transmission the wasted quantity where two different
products mix.
9 A camel stable.
10 A large, upholstered footstool; hassock.
11 [WWII slang] An aerial bomb that fails to detonate.
12 To wobble [OE].
13 [pron bum'bee] reinforced shirt-tails to mitigate the effects of too
much curry [Spike Milligan's attempt to broaden the proprieties of "Aunty"
BBC: see humor/british/goons/]
14 To render senseless or inactive.
15 A person charged with looking after horses; a groom.
16 A beam which supports the mid-span of a rafter and is itself supported
by posts.

Attempting to displace Dan as Dixonary's alliteration ace, are we?
And with 19 sources and 16 defs, it seems we have more than one combination
here. Hmmm.
I'll try:

Hmmm indeed! The '18' was an accidental left-over from an earlier draft. My
second mistake! Watch out for the third . . .
