View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2355 the LINISH finish

The next deal goes to Dick Weltz with 6 natural points for his linseed oil
and varnish.
Runner up is Dave Cunningham with 6 unnatural, and then Matthew Grieco with
5.

The correct definition was No.17 "to polish and smooth ..." correctly
chosen by Dave alone.
And for those of you who like details:
.... well, that Johnny Barrs did it to me once more! He pretty much hit upon
the true definition by way of a joke.
Again!
But this time, I felt I could legitimately combine the two.
I had chosen my definition from the Collins English Dictionary:
"to polish and smooth the surface of a material by grinding or sanding"
but because the OED etymology states that the word did originate from a
blend of "linen" and "finish", I took the plunge and combined it with
Johnny's, which was:
"polish; buff; the final smoothing of a metal surface with a linen cloth"
So much for power and wisdom???
All protests will be referred to the Dixonary Supreme Court.

Congratulations Dick, and over to you!
Best wishes all,
Millie

PS
Yes Chuck, I did watch the eclipse on Wednesday morning; the webcast from
Cairns was very good.
Just 52% here in Melbourne, and viewed using the sophisticated "binoculars
onto a piece of card" apparatus :)

That's strange. I did, for 17 and 19, but for some reason it doesn't seem to have got through to the
group. I wonder if the moderation bug has struck again?

Best wishes,
Tim Bourne.

Sorry Tim ... no, it didn't get through to me either.
Can we adjust the scores Mike?
Or not?

Anything can be adjusted if the price is right. Since I haven't done the
rolling scores yet, it's free!
