I get it. But: Efrem says (and I believe him) that he posted that new-word
announcement as a brand-new message, from scratch, and not as a Reply to a
current thread.
In fact, his announcement wasn't appended to a current or even recent
thread but to a message from several months back. How is THAT explained?

It is (probably) explained because the subject line matched a subject line
of the previous thread. (Efrem may not have included the "Re: " tag that
Google happened to include on it when it sent it out; it may have been
automatically added by Google.)
I'm guessing Google Groups first checks for a "References" tag which is
put on replies or forwards, referencing the previous message to thread it.
(This is undesired behavior for us when we intentionally change the
subject line, but Google appears to be "dumb" in this case.)
Since Efrem begun the second message as a new message, Google missed this
but then went to followup logic. I'm guessing the matching subject line
of a recent message triggered an automatic threading. In most cases (at
least with recent messages) this would be desirable behavior to thread a
message with a similar subject line into a thread. However, in an attempt
to "undo" the previous threading, it was unsuccessful.
His last message, fully changing the subject line, was finally successful
in being unique.
