This was a interesting round...until the last couple of votes it was a
3-way tie but Dodi's figureless def picked up and she is our next dealeer
with 7 natural points with Dick being the real winner with 6 points, Tony
had 5. Millie spoiled my D0 by voting for the purring cat which was from
the OED

Millie's own definition, #2 as she pointed out has the interesting use of
both upwards and upward in the one sentence .It also came from the OED -
sursumvergence - apparently (according to various word gurus) editorially
your side of the pond tends to prefer upward without the s and our side
generally uses the s; but both are fully acceptable for adverbial use on
both sides of the pond

Congratulations—to Dick as the real winner and to Johnny for a near-D0; it
was a great word. That "see fig" in my def, which seemed to persuade
several players that it might be authentic, was because I had in my head
this image of what might be a potter's tool and couldn't think of a way to
describe it succinctly. "See fig." was a copout.

It just goes to show you. I'm not sure what, but . . .

Anyway, a new word will be announced later this evening.

Well, I completely misread the deadline, I guess. I could have sworn 7 Sep was tomorrow. But it did seem an overlong deadline. Maybe I missed the correction. Oh well, no harm done.
