View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2330, PERRON: Guessing Game On!

Dodi Schultz
August 21st, 2012, 11:46 PM
Here's the long and short of it, in that order: twenty claimed definitions
of PERRON, one and only one of which came from a dictionary. Your task: to
find that one. You have, as usual, two guesses; they should be registered
publicly, by direct REPLY to this message.

You may vote even if you didn't get around to submitting a def of your own,
even if you've just now joined the game. You may NOT vote if you now
realize that you recognize the real definition (in that case, please let me
know by private e-mail to my address).

Your deadline: Thursday, 23 August, 12 noon PDT, 1 p.m. MDT, 2 p.m. CDT, 3
p.m. EDT, 8 p.m. in England, 9 p.m. in the Netherlands; and Friday, 24
August, 5 a.m. in eastern Australia.

—Dodi

1. a Scottish copper coin of the value of one half of a bawbee, or one
sixth of an English penny; the smallest coin; hence the phrase: not
to care a perron.

2. the immature pome (prior to the complete fusion of the carpals) of
certain fruit-bearing trees of the family _Rosaceae_.

3. an ancient game from South America, quite similar to outdoor games
boules, p‚tanque, bocce bowling, and croquet.

4. _Chiefly Southwestern US_ a flat arid valley surrounded by mountains
and draining into a shallow central lake.

5. in Greek cuisine, a baked fish recipe, usually with oregano, red
pepper, olive oil, onion and feta cheese.

6. metal armor used with chain mail for added protection of the neck and
upper chest.

7. an external flight of steps, esp. one at the front entrance to a
building.

8. _Zool._ the plate over the entrance to a shell; the gill-cover of
fishes.

9. an ornamental terminating part, as on a post or piece of furniture.

10. a large (45-50 kg) Andalusian dog bred to guard flocks of sheep.

11. a marble or iron slab on which molten glass is rolled.

12. a rock used as a hammer stone in flint-knapping.

13. [Sp.] a pilot fish commonly found near sharks.

14. a small sour cherry grown in the Pyrenees.

15. a smoky fire to drive away insects.

16. a breed of heavy draught horse.

17. a roundel attached to a lance.

18. a railway platform.

19. a harvest festival.

20. a tufted egret.

For lack of a better idea, the first and the last:

1. a Scottish copper coin of the value of one half of a bawbee, or one
sixth of an English penny; the smallest coin; hence the phrase: not
to care a perron.

20. a tufted egret.

20 to prove I read them all. Or at least skipped to the end of the list
and read backwards.

And 16 because that's as far up the list I read (backwards) until I got
bored.

and

3. an ancient game from South America, quite similar to outdoor games
boules, p tanque, bocce bowling, and croquet.

only a game ... and I suppose I'll climb the list to #14
