View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2325: REQUIETORY [Results]

The word *requietory* was clearly a poor choice.

OED Online offered me the word when I clicked the *Lost for words* link. It
looked unobvious to me, but most players homed in on an origin in Latin *
requiescere* ‘sleep, rest, lie buried’, or its etymon *quies, *in
preclassical Latin ‘quiet’.

This led to a slew of similar definitions, some of which I felt I had no
choice but to combine. I combine defs reluctantly; and I can’t recall being
faced with so many hard choices in a single round. All my own fault,
naturally, for choosing an obvious word. If you'd like to know why I
decided against combining a particular pair of similar definitions, just
email me.

The OED <http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/163252?p=emailA4CgRVZfhW4.o&d=163252>cites only one known occurrence in English, and from a book I believe no
player, not even Johnny, is likely to have read. But he DQd anyway.
The winner is Chris Carson, whose definition "of little or no importance"
received 4 votes, plus 2 points for guessing the correct def.

Dave Cunningham takes coveted second place with 5 points. And there were
two players in runner-up position with 4 points: Judy Madnick and Daniel
Widdis.

The true definition was 1: "a sepulcher" (OED 3ed, March 2010; online
version June 2012), which three players guessed, and Dodi Schultz submitted
a synonymous def ("a tomb") that I had no option but to combine.
