Do I see an unfamiliar name there? Are we welcoming a new player?

Mr. Zorbas is familiar to Mr. Cunningham and Ms. Savage, and any other
former denizens of the MPGAMES forum.

He's dealing "that other game" right now and nudged me to submit a def, so
I nudged him back!

We're not so formal here. May we know Mr. Z's first name, so we can welcome
him?

The official results will list him as "James Zorbas" but for the 20+ years
I've known him online, the nickname "JimZ" is synonymous with BASHing. I
am not familiar with the origin of the tradition, but it seems Jim has
always been the target of intentional abuse. He was a section leader in
MPGAMES, I think in the section associated with the YGI! Game. Where did
the BASHing begin? It could be that he is a fan of the Boston Red Sox
which (until recently) never won the big game. Or that he was a Patriots
fan, who only really had a good season when they cheated. I do recall a
photo in the files section of the MPGAMES forum that showed JimZ being
BASHed by a fellow forum member. I don't remember who it was, but I did
have the honor and pleasure of having a 3-hour layover in Boston last
year, and I made it a point to meet JimZ at the airport and did not part
ways until I had the opportunity to BASH him as well.

Jim did play the "British Legends" game on CompuServe, but never got past
the rank of "Sorcerer". There were frequent jokes about how some of the
wizards, including Cail and Roncesval (the below mentioned players) and
AquaDyne (yours truly) would enjoy the pleasure of destroying his
character with a Finger of Death (FOD).

He's been playing the sister game to this one since before I joined back
in the early 90's. In fact, I only wandered over from there to Dixonary
when invited by "Typo" who we all know and love as Froma Bessel. I'm not
sure I'll get him to be a regular here, but one more def for this round is
one more def!

What does that mean? Never heard the expression before.

It's the usual verb "to bash" as in, at least in the photo I saw, to hit
someone over the head with a (foam) baseball bat.

I'm unsure why it is always expressed in all capitals. But I'm unsure of
many things that were on the internet (or the online community in general)
in the 1980s and 1990's.

Oh. It was the all-caps rendering that puzzled me. I supposed it might be
some sort of acronym.

I have always seen it rendered thus. It may very well be an acronym, long
forgotten. I'll have to ask him.

How about Bat Across Someone's Head?

A bash could also be, according to my dictionary, a wildly good time.

Well, here's the reply. I guess it was just something that stuck.

"In 1990 I was selected as the MPGames MOTM (Member Of The Month) in
CompuServe. At that time, there was a MOTM section you could access when
you were selected as MOTM.

When I went there, there was the usual gaggle of welcome messages and
other digs. I replied to one of the digs something like.."What is this,
BASH JimZ day!" Of course, the other people picked it up and there was
suggested a BASH JIMZ Week, a BASH JIMZ Month, a BASH JIMZ Year, Century,
Milennium etc."

So is he joining us? We can certainly promise him that there'll be no
bashing (or BASHing).
